The Role and Why It's Important

The Backroom Manager keeps the behind-the-scenes operation of the store running safely and efficiently, making sure product is received, verified, and delivered to the right place at the right time. In this role, you'll lead the backroom team, manage schedules, oversee inventory receiving, and maintain a clean, organized operation from the dock to the floor. If you are a dependable leader who takes pride in efficiency, safety, and getting things done right, we'd love to have you on our team.

What You'll Do

No two days are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction a positive one

  • Plan, prepare, and adjust work schedules, assign employees to specific duties, and follow up to ensure tasks are completed properly and on time

  • Receive product from trucks, verify invoices for accuracy, sign vendor paperwork, and receive all vendor orders

  • Unload trucks using forklifts and ensure product is placed in a non-intrusive area before delivering items to the appropriate department

  • Protect the cold food chain and maintain the integrity of all product throughout the receiving process

  • Coordinate the receipt and secure storage of controlled items including liquor, cigarettes, and pharmacy inventory

  • Process returned items with drivers and ensure signed receipts are returned to the accounting office in a timely manner

  • Ensure receipts are taken to accounting promptly and work with company subsidiaries to receive product

  • Maintain a clean, organized backroom and ensure cardboard and trash areas are cleaned daily

  • Maintain cleanliness of the dock area and behind the store

  • Maintain the area for sale items to ensure convenience for the management team

  • Stay aware of store needs, particularly in the grocery department, and work with internal customers in a timely and efficient manner

  • Keep training certifications current including forklift certification

  • Perform small equipment repairs for store departments as needed

  • Work in a safe and efficient manner to reduce product damage and spoilage

  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Lead and manage backroom employees, maintaining high standards and a productive work environment

  • Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables

  • Perform simple addition and subtraction, copy figures, and count and record accurately

  • Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing

  • Work effectively as part of a team to keep the store running smoothly and efficiently

Accountable and Reports to: District Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home; Service Managers

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required

  • 6 months to 1 year of similar or related experience required

  • Supervisory experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 100 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistance

  • Continuously stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate pallet jacks, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment (required operator certification must be completed prior to independent use)

  • Work in cooler or freezer environments for extended periods

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades to cut, trim, or grind product

  • Where applicable to the role, and in accordance with applicable age and legal requirements: operate a cardboard baler or compactor

  • Where applicable to the role: perform repetitive motions associated with dough mixing, scaling, and proofing

  • Ability to unload, lift, stock, and rotate incoming truck freight and merchandise

Working Environment

This role is performed in a backroom and store environment where you will be active and on your feet throughout your shift. You will have continual exposure to dirt and frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dampness, equipment movement hazards, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.

The anticipated hourly starting wage for this position is $16.50 to $20.60 depending on experience.
