A. General Description:
The Director works to support ASHA’s strategic direction and provide technical expertise regarding audiology practice information and assistance to members, students, national office staff, federal agencies, external organizations, and other professionals in the health care community. The role of the ASHA Audiology Professional Practices unit is to develop, promote, and support Association actions related to audiology professional practices while remaining current on national trends and developments in the audiology profession. This position requires a creative thinker with high energy who has the ability and desire to work on teams in a highly responsive, collaborative environment.
B. Responsibilities:
1. Identify current issues, trends, and topics within the Audiology profession and provide audiology expertise to national office staff related to
- development and implementation of projects
- professional development opportunities
- for-sale products
- continuing education conferences
- other events, activities and opportunities that would be beneficial and useful to ASHA Audiology members.
2. Develop relationships with and identify subject matter experts who can partner with ASHA in
- professional development opportunities;
- convention and meeting activities;
- resource creation for consumers and ASHA members;
- service as a representative of ASHA with external organizations, committees, boards, etc.
3. Provide clinical advice and technical support expertise on a variety of topics to
- ASHA members to support their professional work;
- consumers to assist them with their hearing health needs;
- represent the Association in interviews with national and regional print, broadcast, and news media on a variety of audiology topics.
4. Serve on Association work groups and governance-related joint committees.
5. Cultivate and enhance working relationships with related professional and consumer organizations, and national public and private agencies, on behalf of the profession of audiology and ASHA members.
6. Write and submit articles and provide audiology content expertise for a variety of Association resources

C. Contacts:
To accomplish responsibilities listed above, the incumbent has contact with:
- Director, ASHA Audiology Professional Practices to receive work assignments, policy direction, and coaching
- Chief Staff Officer for Audiology to share and exchange ideas
- Board of Directors and other Association volunteer leaders and members to assist with activities that influence and shape audiology policies
- National Office staff to provide expert audiology content, advise on audiology issues, share information, and identify opportunities for collaboration
- State and federal governmental agencies to represent the Association regarding ASHA Audiology policies and practices and to advocate on behalf of members and consumers
- The public and audiology members to provide information on issues affecting the audiology profession
- ASHA Audiology Practices team members and other National Office staff for teaming activities and team leadership development
D. Freedom to Act:
Coaching and direction of tasks will be provided by the Senior Director, ASHA Audiology Professional Practice Unit with responsibility and authority to complete tasks related to such policy. Freedom to propose innovative and creative projects. Work is evaluated to see if desired outcomes are achieved and if behaviors that support the desired culture in the National Office are exhibited.
E. Qualifications – Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
1. Knowledge and skills typically acquired through:
- Master’s or doctorate degree in audiology
- Five years or more of successful experience in the practice of audiology; pediatric / educational audiology experience is preferred but not required
- Current CCC-A
- Audiology leadership activities in previous work settings, locally in the community, at the state or national level, or with related associations
2. Scope and depth of technical skills/knowledge:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to use appropriate computer software and to learn new software as needed
- Knowledge of professional content areas and professional issues related to audiology
- Evidence of professional publications or presentations in the area of audiology preferred
3. Scope and depth of nontechnical skills/knowledge:
- Strong interpersonal and team facilitation skills
- Effective oral and written communication
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and to manage time efficiently to complete multiple projects
- Availability to participate in occasional weekend meetings and evening conference calls
