How much do prn audiologist jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for prn audiologist in the United States is $87,247.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $70,500.00 and $98,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is AI going to replace audiologists?

AI technology can assist audiologists by improving diagnostic accuracy and streamlining administrative tasks, but it is unlikely to fully replace the role. Audiologists require clinical judgment, patient interaction, and hands-on procedures that AI cannot perform independently. The profession will likely evolve to incorporate AI tools as complementary resources rather than replacements.

What are PRN Audiologists?

PRN Audiologists are licensed professionals who provide hearing and balance care on an as-needed, or 'pro re nata' (PRN), basis. Unlike full-time or part-time staff, PRN Audiologists fill in for staff absences, help during periods of high patient volume, or work special assignments. Their duties typically include conducting hearing assessments, fitting hearing aids, and counseling patients about hearing health. This flexible role is common in hospitals, clinics, and private practices looking for temporary or additional audiology support.

What is the difference between Prn Audiologist vs Full-Time Audiologist?

AspectPrn AudiologistFull-Time Audiologist
CredentialsAu.D. degree, state licensure, certification (e.g., ASHA, AAA)Same as Prn Audiologist
Work EnvironmentPart-time, flexible hours, often in clinics or hospitalsFull-time, consistent schedule, similar settings
Employer & Industry UsageHospitals, clinics, schools, private practicesSame as Prn Audiologist
Work ScheduleAs needed, variable hoursStandard full-time hours

Prn Audiologists work on a part-time, as-needed basis, offering flexibility but with less job stability. Full-Time Audiologists have consistent schedules and benefits. Both roles require similar credentials and work in comparable environments, serving the same industry needs.

Who makes more money, SLP or audiologist?

Audiologists generally earn higher salaries than Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs). Audiologists typically have more specialized training in hearing and balance disorders, and their median annual wages tend to be higher due to the technical nature of their work and the requirement for a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree. Salary differences can vary based on experience, location, and work setting.

Is there a high demand for audiologists?

The demand for audiologists, including PRN audiologists, is expected to grow due to an aging population and increased awareness of hearing health. Employment opportunities are strong in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, and private practices, often requiring specialized skills and certification. This growth makes audiology a stable career choice with increasing job prospects.

How does the flexible, as-needed schedule of a PRN Audiologist impact collaboration with full-time staff and patient care continuity?

As a PRN Audiologist, you'll work on an as-needed basis, often covering for absences or increased patient demand. This flexible schedule means you may interact with a variety of staff members and must quickly adapt to established clinic protocols. Effective communication is essential to ensure smooth handoffs and continuity of care for patients. Building rapport with full-time audiologists and support staff will help you stay informed about ongoing cases and maintain a high standard of service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PRN Audiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PRN Audiologist, you need a Doctorate or Master's degree in Audiology, state licensure, and strong diagnostic and rehabilitative skills in hearing and balance disorders. Familiarity with audiometric testing equipment, hearing aid programming software, and electronic health records (EHR) is typically required. Excellent interpersonal communication, adaptability, and patient-centered care are crucial soft skills for success in this flexible, on-call role. These qualifications and skills ensure accurate diagnoses, effective treatment, and high-quality service in diverse clinical environments.

Can audiologists treat tinnitus?

Audiologists are trained to evaluate and manage tinnitus, often using sound therapy, counseling, and hearing aids to reduce symptoms. They may also recommend additional medical or psychological treatment if necessary, depending on the underlying cause. Tinnitus management is a common part of audiology practice, requiring specialized knowledge and equipment.
