Director App information

What does a director of applications do?

A Director of App oversees the strategy, development, and performance of mobile or web applications within an organization. They lead teams of developers, designers, and product managers to ensure that app projects align with company goals and user needs. Their responsibilities may include setting product vision, managing budgets, analyzing app metrics, and coordinating cross-functional initiatives. They also stay updated on industry trends to keep the app competitive and user-friendly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of applications?

To thrive as a Director of Applications, you need extensive experience in software development, application lifecycle management, and a relevant degree such as computer science or information technology. Familiarity with enterprise software platforms, cloud technologies, project management tools, and certifications like PMP or ITIL are highly valued. Leadership, strategic thinking, and strong communication skills help drive cross-functional teams and align technology solutions with business objectives. These skills are essential to ensure application reliability, meet organizational goals, and foster innovation in a fast-evolving digital landscape.

What are some common challenges faced by a director of application development in balancing technical leadership and strategic planning?

A Director of Application Development often faces the challenge of balancing hands-on technical oversight with broader strategic planning. While they must ensure that development teams are following best practices and delivering high-quality software, they are also responsible for aligning application initiatives with the organization's long-term business goals. This requires strong communication skills to bridge the gap between technical teams and executive leadership, as well as the ability to prioritize competing demands. Additionally, directors need to stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends to guide their teams effectively.

  • Collaborate with research project managers to evaluate and determine which clinical trials to open across the organization.
  • Help identify and assign qualified Principal Investigators for clinical trials.
  • Establish protocols, expectations, and standards for Principal Investigator oversight.
  • Provide medical expertise and guidance to research staff while supporting adherence to organizational policies and research requirements.
  • Educate physicians and clinical teams regarding new clinical trials, protocol amendments, trial closures, and research opportunities.
  • Serve as a clinical research resource for newly hired physicians.
  • Meet regularly with clinical research coordinators to review trial activity, patient accrual, and screening opportunities.
  • Partner with research coordinators and physicians to strengthen appropriate patient screening and trial identification.
  • Review research papers and scholarly work developed by Starling Oncology physicians.
  • Provide physician leadership during research audits, major protocol deviations, and compliance matters.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary physician, clinical, and professional staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Maintain timely communication and completion of research-related documentation and signatures.
  • Track and report administrative time associated with clinical research leadership responsibilities.

  • Competitive base salary starting at $500,000+, dependent upon experience and location
  • Medical Director Stipend
  • wRVU incentive model with additional earning opportunity
  • Typical established physicians can achieve $650,000+ in total cash compensation
  • $100,000 guaranteed sign-on bonus
  • 5 CME days plus $2,500 annually
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
  • Malpractice coverage
  • Paid time off
  • Relocation assistance and student loan repayment support
  • Support with initial state licensing fees and license renewals

Our integrated model brings together community oncology, clinical research, physician leadership, multidisciplinary care, and technology-enabled workflows to improve the patient experience while supporting physicians in practicing at the top of their license.

For a physician passionate about clinical research, this role offers something unique: the opportunity to lead the expansion of clinical trials across a growing oncology organization while continuing to care directly for patients.

You will have the opportunity to influence which studies we bring to our communities, help physicians identify patients who may benefit from investigational therapies, develop stronger research practices across our network, and expand access to clinical trials outside of the traditional academic medical center environment.
