What is a direct mail specialist?

A direct mail specialist is a professional responsible for planning, creating, and managing direct mail marketing campaigns. They work with businesses to design mail pieces, develop target mailing lists, and coordinate the production and distribution of printed materials to reach specific audiences. Their goal is to generate customer interest, increase sales, and build brand awareness using physical mail as a marketing channel. They often analyze campaign results to optimize future mailings and ensure compliance with postal regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a direct mail specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Direct Mail Specialist, you need expertise in marketing strategy, data analysis, and campaign management, usually supported by a background in marketing or communications. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, direct mail automation tools, and postal regulations is important. Strong project management, attention to detail, and communication skills help coordinate with vendors and ensure campaign accuracy. These skills ensure effective targeting, cost efficiency, and successful execution of direct mail campaigns that drive customer engagement.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in direct mail campaigns, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in direct mail is ensuring your message stands out amid a crowded mailbox and yields a measurable ROI. Professionals often need to balance creativity in design with data-driven targeting to maximize response rates. Addressing these challenges involves staying current with postal regulations, leveraging customer data for personalized content, and continuously testing different formats and offers. Collaborating closely with graphic designers, copywriters, and data analysts is also essential for creating effective campaigns that resonate with the target audience.

Neighborhood Marketing Coordinator (ESP Painting)

Aleph Ventures

Portland, OR

$80K - $110K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Build the engine that drives our growth.

ESP Painting is scaling fast, and we're looking for a Neighborhood Marketing Coordinator to own and execute the local, boots-on-the-ground strategies that fuel our pipeline.

This is not a desk job. You'll be in the field, building teams, driving results, and turning neighborhoods into predictable revenue channels.

If you're competitive, organized, and thrive in a fast-moving environment where results matter-you'll do very well here.

What You'll Own

You are responsible for one thing: generating high-quality homeowner appointments at scale.

You'll do that by leading and executing across multiple channels:

Door-to-Door Canvassing

  • Recruit, train, and lead a team of appointment setters
  • Set performance standards (doors/hour, appointments, close rates)
  • Coach in the field-role play, ride-alongs, live feedback
  • Personally produce (10-20 hrs/week in the field)

Flyer Delivery Program

  • Build and manage a flyer distribution team
  • Hit weekly delivery + appointment targets
  • Own routing, coverage, and performance tracking by zip code
  • Ensure execution aligns with broader marketing strategy

Yard Sign Strategy

  • Deploy signs strategically to maximize visibility + inbound leads
  • Manage inventory, placement tracking, and coverage
  • Sync with canvassing + direct mail efforts

Events & Home Shows

  • Plan and run local events and expos
  • Train staff on scripts + lead capture
  • Track ROI and continuously improve performance

Neighborhood Digital Presence

  • Engage in local Facebook groups and online communities
  • Build trust and convert conversations into leads
  • Maintain brand reputation at the neighborhood level

Outbound Support

  • Partner with calling teams on cold, follow-up, and reactivation lists
  • Support appointment generation across channels

What Winning Looks Like

  • Consistently hitting weekly/monthly appointment targets
  • Building and retaining a high-performing field team
  • Knowing your numbers: cost per lead, set rate, close rate, ROI
  • Creating predictable, scalable neighborhood-level growth

Compensation

  • $40,000 Base Salary
  • Aggressive performance bonuses tied to:
  • Your personal production
  • Team results (appointments + revenue)
  • Marketing efficiency (cost-on-margin performance)

Total On-Target Earnings: $80K-$110K+Top performers will exceed this.

Who This Is For

You'll thrive here if you:

  • Like leading from the front, not the sidelines
  • Are comfortable with accountability and metrics
  • Have experience in D2D, canvassing, or team leadership (preferred, not required)
  • Can recruit, train, and motivate hourly/entry-level staff
  • Are highly organized and operationally sharp
  • Want a clear path to leadership growth in a scaling company

Why ESP Painting

  • Proven sales model with strong close rates
  • Clear targets and scorecards (no ambiguity)
  • Real ownership over a critical growth channel
  • High autonomy + high accountability
  • Opportunity to scale a team and grow into senior leadership

Bottom Line

If you can build teams, drive activity, and turn effort into results, this role will pay you well and open doors fast.

If you're looking for something easy or purely strategic-this isn't it.

Apply if you're ready to own the number.
