Coil Winder / Heavy Assembly Technician

$29.93/hr + $2 Shift Premium | 2nd Shift | Waukesha, WI

Kelly Services is hiring Coil Winders / Heavy Assembly Technicians for a specialized manufacturing opportunity in Waukesha, WI.

If you enjoy hands-on mechanical work, working with copper, tools, technical drawings, and large industrial equipment, this could be a strong next step.

You’ll train to build the precision coil windings used inside medium-power, large-power, and extra-high-voltage transformers. This is skilled assembly work that combines mechanical ability, craftsmanship, attention to detail, and teamwork.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Coil Winder, you’ll learn how to set up, wind, assemble, and finish large transformer coils from start to completion.

Your work may include:

  • Setting up and operating horizontal and vertical winding machines

  • Building medium-power, large-power, and extra-high-voltage transformer coils

  • Loading cylinders onto mandrels and winding equipment

  • Pulling copper conductor from de-reelers

  • Setting up copper, insulation, tooling, and other required materials

  • Bending, shaping, spinning, and positioning copper conductor

  • Performing induction brazing

  • Insulating copper conductors according to established procedures

  • Aligning and placing spacers and other internal coil components

  • Reading and following print drawings, winding sheets, specifications, and bills of material

  • Using calibrated tools and equipment to verify dimensions and tolerances

  • Inspecting your work throughout the winding process

  • Unloading and positioning completed coils

  • Repairing minor winding defects when required

  • Supporting other operators with inspections and quality checks

  • Performing basic equipment and tool maintenance

What We're Looking For

Physical Requirements

This is an active, hands-on manufacturing position.

Candidates should be comfortable:

  • Standing for 7 hours or more during the shift

  • Frequently walking and standing

  • Bending, kneeling, twisting, pushing, and pulling

  • Lifting at least 50 lbs. multiple times during a shift

  • Working around large industrial equipment

  • Working at heights of 12 feet or more

  • Using overhead cranes and powered industrial equipment

  • Wearing required PPE and following all safety procedures

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Prior experience in coil winding, heavy mechanical assembly, manufacturing, or power equipment is preferred

  • Candidates with strong mechanical skills and the ability to learn technical processes are encouraged to apply
