What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Dimensional Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dimensional Engineer, you need expertise in metrology, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and a relevant engineering degree, often in mechanical or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), CAD software, and quality management systems is typically required, with certifications like ASME GD&T or Six Sigma being advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication skills help you effectively interpret data and collaborate across teams. These abilities are crucial for ensuring product accuracy, minimizing defects, and maintaining high manufacturing standards.

What is the difference between Dimensional Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectDimensional EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in CAD or measurement toolsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, often with PE license
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, focusing on precision measurementsDesign, analysis, and testing across various industries
Industry UsageUsed in industries requiring tight tolerances and quality controlBroadly used in product design, development, and manufacturing

Dimensional Engineers specialize in precise measurements, quality control, and ensuring parts meet specifications, often working closely with manufacturing teams. Mechanical Engineers focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering degrees, Dimensional Engineers emphasize measurement and quality assurance, whereas Mechanical Engineers focus on product development and system functionality.

How does a Dimensional Engineer typically collaborate with design and manufacturing teams during a project?

A Dimensional Engineer plays a key role in bridging design intent and manufacturing reality by working closely with both design and production teams. They review CAD models and engineering drawings to ensure dimensional accuracy, then communicate requirements and tolerances to manufacturing personnel. Regular meetings and feedback sessions help address any feasibility concerns early in the process. This collaboration ensures that parts meet quality standards while minimizing costly rework or delays.

What Is a Dimensional Engineer?

A dimensional engineer works in manufacturing fields, particularly the automotive industry, and helps to design new or updated production processes through the analysis of data. As a dimensional engineer, your primary responsibilities include designing components for the assembly process to increase productivity and safety. Your daily duties may involve analyzing data, identifying problems in the manufacturing process, and documenting case studies. You may also perform statistical reporting and use simulation tools for planning.

What is a Dimensional Engineer?

A Dimensional Engineer is a professional who specializes in ensuring the accuracy and consistency of physical dimensions in manufactured products. They use advanced measurement techniques and tools to analyze parts, assemblies, and systems, ensuring they meet precise specifications and tolerances. Dimensional Engineers play a crucial role in quality control, working closely with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to identify and resolve any discrepancies. Their work helps prevent costly errors, improve product performance, and maintain compliance with industry standards.

Job description

Job Description:

About Dimensional:

Dimensional was built around a set of ideas bigger than the firm itself. With a confidence in markets, deep connections to the academic community, and a focus on implementation, we go where the science leads, and continue to pursue new insights, both large and small, that can benefit our clients.

The Technology Department at Dimensional leverages the rapidly evolving state of the art to engineer scalable, innovative, and research driven solutions to improve our client's financial lives.

The Platform Engineers at Dimensional are focused on leading, designing and developing the platform and services that underpin all of all Dimensional' s applications and business processes across a variety of technical domains. Services that support the software development process are key components of the platform, as they provide our engineering teams with tools, processes, and infrastructure to develop software for our business.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Senior SRE to serve as the operations owner for the developer tooling ecosystem that shapes how engineers work day to day, including Python and .NET toolchains and IDEs. This is a hybrid role balancing steady-state operations and engineering work that meaningfully advances the tooling and the people who depend on them.

This role suits someone who is genuinely motivated by the pursuit of excellence - someone who takes pride in the products and services they own and is always looking for the next opportunity to raise the bar, whether that means eliminating a friction point in the local development experience or building automation that lets developers focus on code rather than tooling.

What You'll Work On:

Operations & Reliability

  • Serve as a primary escalation point for production support across each of the developer tooling ecosystems

  • Own the operational reliability of developer tooling ecosystems, including Python toolchains (uv, Poetry, etc.), .NET SDKs, and IDE configurations and extensions

  • Monitor product and service health and performance, proactively identifying and addressing issues before they impact developer productivity

  • Maintain and continuously improve runbooks, escalation procedures, and operational documentation

  • Collaborate with security to harden developer tooling configurations and manage software vulnerabilities

  • Contribute to on-call rotations and maintain runbooks and escalation procedures

Platform Engineering

  • Create and maintain standardized developer tooling configurations and distribution mechanisms - making it easy for engineers to get started, stay current, and stay unblocked

  • Lead or contribute to developer experience initiatives, using data (build times, pipeline success rates, time-to-first-commit) to identify the highest impact friction points and build solutions that address them at scale

  • Participate in architecture reviews and contribute to the overall platform roadmap

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience

  • 5+ years of experience in SRE, DevOps, platform engineering, or developer tooling-focused role

  • Solid understanding of Python ecosystem tooling - dependency management (Poetry, uv), virtual environments, and packaging

  • Familiarity with .NET development tooling and SDK management in an enterprise environment

  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, PowerShell, Bash, or similar)

  • A track record of not just operating products and services but evolving them

  • Strong communication skills and genuinely interested in partnering with developers across the organization

  • Demonstrated ability to drive incidents to resolution and communicate clearly under pressure

  • A bias toward automation and a low tolerance for repetitive manual work

Nice to Have:

  • Experience leveraging SDLC platforms to deliver software solutions

  • Experience building or maintaining internal developer portals or self-service tooling

  • Exposure to IDE plugin or extension management at scale (VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio)

  • Experience with developer experience metric frameworks

  • Familiarity with container-based build environments or ephemeral CI runners
