The Vice President, Software Engineering and Applications serves as the senior IT leader for Institutional Solutions, responsible for setting the software engineering vision, defining delivery strategies, and driving business outcomes through innovative, customer-centric technology solutions that support the full lifecycle of institutional products and services. As a key member of the Institutional Solutions senior leadership team, this role enables enterprise growth, enhances customer, consultant, and distribution partner experiences, and advances modernization across Pension Risk Transfer, Structured Settlements, Stable Value, Funding Agreement Backed Notes, and related institutional product platforms. This role provides strategic leadership in the responsible adoption of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and advanced automation, to improve operational efficiency, strengthen decision-making, accelerate innovation, and unlock new sources of value across the business. By effectively leveraging information services resources, applications, delivery models, and investment strategies, the VP ensures alignment with enterprise objectives while supporting the evolving needs of institutional clients and markets. Through the development of high-performing talent, disciplined execution, and a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous transformation, the VP advances Mutual of Omaha's long-term strategic priorities within the Institutional Solutions business.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Serve as the senior IT leader for Institutional Solutions, setting the software engineering vision and leading end-to-end delivery strategies that support growth, product innovation, and modernization across Pension Risk Transfer, Structured Settlements, Stable Value, Funding Agreement Backed Notes, and other institutional product offerings.
  • Oversee the full software engineering lifecycle-planning, development, deployment, and support-ensuring platforms and applications effectively enable underwriting, sales, marketing, product development, policy administration, claims, and servicing capabilities aligned to business priorities.
  • Drive modernization of Institutional Solutions technology platforms, championing Agile, DevSecOps, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), and cloud-native architectures to improve speed to market, scalability, reliability, and digital experiences for policyholders, providers, advisors, and partners.
  • Build and lead high-performing engineering teams focused on delivering secure, high-quality solutions, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement within a highly regulated environment.
  • Partner closely with Institutional Solutions business leaders to translate strategy and requirements into customer- and distribution-centric digital solutions that ensure successful & timely executive of strategic priorities.
  • Manage and optimize relationships with internal partners, vendors, and third-party solution providers supporting Institutional Solutions ecosystems, including policy administration systems, claims platforms, underwriting tools, and digital engagement solutions.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience across software engineering, application development, IT infrastructure/operations, architecture, or information security, with a proven record of delivering complex, scalable solutions.
  • Strong familiarity with compliance frameworks, regulatory expectations, and risk management, with experience in highly regulated environments such as health insurance, annuities, or financial services; plus experience governing multivendor ecosystems, contract negotiation, and performance management.
  • Strong expertise in technology planning, solution development, and modern platforms, operating systems, and programming languages, along with knowledge of current and emerging technology trends in health, retirement, accident, annuity, or financial services industries.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership-motivating teams, fostering cross-organizational collaboration and innovation, and building strong business partnerships.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret data, manage risk, and provide sound, innovative recommendations.
  • Proven ability to build trusted, collaborative partnerships with senior leaders across IT and the business to align priorities, shape strategy, and drive shared outcomes.
  • Experience managing large budgets, capital plans, and complex resource models.
  • Proven ability to develop high-performing hybrid and remote teams, foster continuous learning, accountability, and strong engagement.
  • You promote a collaborative culture, value different ideas and opinions, and listen courageously, remaining curious in all that you do.
  • Able to work at our office located in Omaha, NE, in a hybrid environment.

PREFERRED:

  • Proven ability to lead largescale engineering transformation, including Agile, DevSecOps, CI/CD, cloud adoption, modernization of legacy platforms, and cloud native architecture delivery.
  • Expertise in building platform engineering capabilities (SRE, developer productivity platforms, shared services) and shaping multiyear technology roadmaps aligned to corporate strategy.
  • Success implementing remote first processes, tooling, and collaboration models while maintaining engagement and accountability across distributed teams.
  • Background evaluating or deploying AI/ML, automation, or emerging technologies to drive business impact; participation in industry groups or advisory boards is valued.
