What is digital printing?

Digital printing is a modern printing method that involves transferring digital images directly onto various materials, such as paper, fabric, or plastic, using inkjet or laser printers. Unlike traditional printing techniques that require printing plates, digital printing allows for quick setup, easy customization, and cost-effective short print runs. It's frequently used for producing marketing materials, packaging, signage, and personalized items. The speed and flexibility of digital printing make it ideal for businesses that need high-quality prints with fast turnaround times.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital printing specialist?

To thrive as a Digital Printing Specialist, you need expertise in print production processes, color management, and attention to detail, often supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with digital printing presses, RIP software, Adobe Creative Suite, and workflow management systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, communication, and the ability to work under tight deadlines distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring high-quality print output, efficient production, and satisfied clients in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges faced in a digital printing role, and how can they be managed effectively?

A common challenge in digital printing is ensuring consistent print quality across different jobs and substrates, as minor changes in media or ink can impact results. Additionally, tight deadlines and last-minute client changes require strong time management and adaptability. Effective troubleshooting skills and solid communication with sales, design, and production teams are essential for quickly resolving issues and delivering on client expectations. Staying updated on new printing technologies also helps professionals maintain efficiency and quality in their work.

Job description

Label Aid is a family-owned manufacturer of pressure-sensitive labels, tags, and tape based in Huron, Ohio. Since 1984, we have partnered with startups, established brands, and manufacturers to deliver dependable packaging solutions backed by quality, service, and industry expertise.

Our capabilities include digital and flexographic printing, specialty materials, and premium label embellishments for customers across consumer, industrial, chemical, automotive, and other markets.

Label Aid is seeking an experienced Digital Printing Manager to lead the day-to-day

operation and continued development of our digital printing department. This is a hands-on management role responsible for the people, quality, productivity, equipment, and overall performance of the department.

The Digital Printing Manager will coordinate production, develop operators, troubleshoot production and equipment

problems, reduce waste and downtime, and continually improve quality and efficiency. We are particularly interested in candidates with hands-on experience operating digital printing platforms, preferably toner-based or UV inkjet presses, or digital finishing and converting equipment such as ABG Digicon or comparable platforms. The right candidate will be comfortable working directly on the production floor while also leading people, improving processes, and taking ownership of department performance.

Key Responsibilities:

•Lead the daily operation of the digital printing department, equipment assignments, job priorities, and production workflow.

•Monitor production to ensure quality, productivity, and delivery expectations are

consistently met.

•Identify and resolve production bottlenecks, equipment problems, material

concerns, and workflow issues.

•Take ownership of print quality and investigate defects, reruns, spoilage, customer

complaints, and recurring production problems to determine root causes and

corrective actions.

•Monitor key performance measures including waste, spoilage, setup time,

downtime, press speeds, throughput, and equipment utilization, and use this

information to drive improvement.

•Provide hands-on technical support with digital printing and finishing equipment,

including setup, operation, calibration, color management, troubleshooting, and

process improvement.

•Ensure presses and finishing equipment are properly maintained, calibrated, and

production-ready, and coordinate preventive maintenance as needed.

•Train, coach, cross-train, and develop operators while setting clear expectations

and holding employees accountable for quality, productivity, attendance, safety,

and established procedures.

•Work closely with Prepress, Scheduling, Quality, Finishing, Shipping, Customer

Service, and Management to resolve issues and keep jobs moving efficiently through

production.

•Promote a culture of ownership, problem-solving, continuous improvement, and

early identification of production issues.

Qualifications:

•Hands-on experience with digital printing and/or digital finishing and converting

equipment, preferably within pressure-sensitive labels, flexible packaging, narrow-

web printing, or a related production environment.

•Experience with toner-based digital printing platforms such as Xeikon or HP, UV

inkjet platforms such as Domino or Durst, or digital finishing systems such as ABG

Digicon is highly preferred.

•Previous management, supervisory, or team leadership experience in a

manufacturing environment strongly preferred.

•Strong understanding of digital print production, print-quality standards, color

management, and calibration.

•Experience troubleshooting print defects, equipment problems, and recurring

production issues.

•Familiarity with label materials, substrates, coatings, laminates, adhesives, and

converting processes such as die cutting, varnishing, slitting, rewinding, embossing,

and hot foil stamping.

•Strong mechanical aptitude and technical problem-solving ability.

•Demonstrated ability to improve productivity, reduce waste, minimize downtime,

and improve process consistency.

•Ability to organize people, equipment, and priorities in a fast-paced production

environment.

•Strong communication, coaching, and leadership skills with the ability to set

expectations and hold employees accountable.

What We Offer:

•A hands-on management role with the opportunity to directly influence equipment,

processes, training, and quality.

•An experienced production and management team to support problem-solving and

continuous improvement.

•Opportunities for increased responsibility and career growth as the company

continues to expand.

•401(k) matching and profit sharing.

•Medical, life, dental, and vision insurance.

•Paid time off and holiday pay.

Our Culture

Label Aid is a family-owned company with an entrepreneurial, improvement-focused

culture. We value employees who take pride in their work, communicate directly, solve

problems, help their teammates, and take ownership of results.

We are looking for a manager who will develop the people around them, address problems

at their source, establish better processes, and continually improve the performance of the

department.
