A digital marker works with a marketing team to spread awareness of a company’s product or brand. They work with analytic software to identify target audiences and create appropriate marketing campaigns. On a daily basis, they keep tabs on ongoing email campaigns, check analytics on current marketing campaigns, and adjust spending accordingly. In addition to planning new initiatives, they develop fresh content for website, blog, and social media accounts, including following up on social media activity and discussions.
| Aspect | Digital Marketer | Content Marketer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Focus | Overall online marketing strategies, including SEO, social media, email, and paid advertising | Creating, managing, and distributing valuable content to attract and engage audiences |
| Skills & Certifications | SEO, SEM, analytics, social media marketing, certifications like Google Ads, HubSpot | Content creation, copywriting, storytelling, SEO, content management systems |
| Work Environment | Marketing teams, agencies, digital departments across industries | Content teams, editorial departments, marketing agencies |
| Common Usage | Developing comprehensive digital campaigns | Producing blog posts, videos, and other content assets |
While both roles focus on online engagement, a Digital Marketer manages broad marketing strategies across multiple channels, whereas a Content Marketer specializes in creating and distributing content to attract and retain audiences. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or hiring the right professional.

Job Purpose
The Digital Marketer exists to do two things: run the Museum's paid digital acquisition — deployed selectively for exhibits, Signature Public Programs, and ticket sales — and own the measurement discipline that makes every digital channel accountable, from conversion tracking through to what actually drove a ticket, membership, or donation. Discovery is changing; audiences increasingly encounter institutions through recommendations, summaries, and automated surfaces rather than keyword rankings, and automated ad platforms perform only as well as the conversion signals they're fed. Keeping those signals clean, and the Museum's web properties technically discoverable in that landscape, is the core of this role. The Communications team runs the Museum's organic social presence; the Digital Marketer works directly with Communications to amplify their strongest content through paid support, make its performance measurable, and feed what the data shows back into planning. The role also runs the Museum's email program and coordinates with the VP of Advancement and Marketing Communications on traditional channels.
Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and run paid campaigns (Google Ads, Meta Ads, YouTube, display) for exhibits, Signature Public Programs, and the visitation pathway
Own conversion tracking, UTM taxonomy, and GA4 event configuration; today's automated bidding performs only as well as the signals it's fed, and keeping those signals clean and reconciled against real ticket sales, memberships, and donations is this role's core craft — no campaign launches without complete tracking
Turn ongoing research, collections, and publishing work into content: social posts, targeted boosts, email features, and earned-media support
Run the email program: monthly newsletter, list growth, segmentation, engagement
Run structured tests with defined success criteria and document the learnings
Define conversion events and UTM standards with the Digital Developer so campaign data lands clean in the Museum's analytics
Oversee select traditional-channel deliverables with the VP of Advancement and Marketing Communications
Track shifts in privacy, platform automation, and discovery behavior; perform other duties as required
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or related field
Experience owning both campaign execution and measurement
Experience with hands-on GA4 and Google Tag Manager configuration
Fluency with automated campaign platforms and how conversion signal quality drives their performance
Understanding of digital marketing attribution and the limitations of platform-reported performance metrics
Demonstrated ability to evaluate when paid advertising is the appropriate strategy and when alternative marketing approaches may be more effective.
Working knowledge of structured data, metadata, and indexing fundamentals
Proficiency with CRM, email platforms, and content management systems
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience developing customized solutions, such as scripts, integrations, or reports, when existing tools do not meet business needs.
Working knowledge of how machine learning and automated features within digital marketing platforms, including bidding, audience targeting, and recommendation systems, influence campaign performance.
Experience integrating marketing platforms or tools using APIs.
Experience developing and managing email marketing lifecycle campaigns using Mailchimp, HubSpot, or similar platforms.
Working knowledge of HTML and CSS, including the ability to create or modify basic landing pages.
Experience translating research, scientific, cultural, or other specialized content for general audiences.
Graphic design experience or proficiency with commonly used graphic design tools.
Experience working within nonprofit, cultural, research, museum, attractions, tourism, or related organizations.
Other Requirements
Residence on the island of O’ahu required.
Flexibility in working hours, as some evening and weekend work is required.
