What is a digital intern?

A digital intern is a student working toward a marketing career, usually in an unpaid position where little media experience or skills are required. You usually qualify if you are a senior in college who majors in marketing and needs an internship for college credit. Internships allow you to get a foot in the door and learn from real-world scenarios. Duties include helping with promotions, collecting data from social campaigns, researching competitors, and completing administrative tasks like answering the phone. Qualifications include a strong understanding of marketing techniques and enrollment in a related degree program.

What types of projects can a digital intern expect to work on, and how do these assignments contribute to professional growth?

As a Digital Intern, you will likely be involved in projects such as social media content creation, website updates, digital marketing campaigns, and analytics reporting. These assignments are designed to give you hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and platforms while allowing you to collaborate closely with marketing, design, and IT teams. By working on real-world tasks under the guidance of experienced professionals, you'll develop a portfolio of work and build valuable skills that can support a career in digital marketing, communications, or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Intern, you need a foundational understanding of digital marketing concepts, social media platforms, and basic analytics, often supported by ongoing education in marketing, communications, or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics, social media scheduling platforms, and content management systems is typically expected. Strong communication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are important for effectively supporting digital campaigns, adapting to fast-changing technologies, and contributing to team goals.

WLUK Fall News Intern

Step inside the newsroom where stories break, voices matter, and information moves at the speed of now.

We're looking for a passionate, curious, and driven News Intern to join our team for Fall 2026. As part of a forward-thinking media organization, you won't just observe-you'll actively contribute to the storytelling that informs and connects our community across platforms.

From breaking news to digital-first storytelling, this is your opportunity to experience what modern journalism really looks like.

What You'll Do

This is a fast-paced, real newsroom-no two days are the same.

  • Create & Contribute: Assist in researching, writing, and producing news stories for broadcast and digital platforms
  • Be Where the Action Is: Work alongside reporters, anchors, producers, and photographers-both in the newsroom and out in the field
  • Pitch Ideas: Bring fresh story ideas to the table and help shape coverage that matters to our audience
  • Get Hands-On: Learn how to shoot video, frame compelling visuals, and understand what makes a story stand out
  • Behind the Scenes: Gain exposure to control room operations and how live broadcasts come together in real time

What You'll Gain

This internship is designed to build real skills-not just fill a line on your resume.

  • Hands-on experience in modern, multi-platform journalism
  • A deeper understanding of how today's newsrooms operate-from broadcast to digital and social
  • Opportunities to build a professional portfolio with published or produced work
  • Mentorship from experienced journalists who know the industry inside and out
  • Valuable connections to jumpstart your career in media

To be considered, candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or a recent graduate
  • Be at least a sophomore at an accredited college/university
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Be available to work on-site at WLUK in Green Bay, WI approximately 15 hours per week for 10 weeks
  • Be able to start between August 24th - September 14th
  • Have reliable transportation (housing/relocation is not provided)
  • Be passionate about local news, storytelling, and community impact
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

All candidates must apply through our careers portal and complete pre-employment requirements.

Why Join Us

Because journalism in 2026 is more dynamic than ever-and this is your chance to be part of it.

Join a team that values accuracy, creativity, and impact. Help tell stories that matter, develop skills that translate across platforms, and take your first step into a career in news.
