PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Supervise daily activities of vehicle repair and maintenance operations to ensure proper performance, repair and safety of all district vehicles to ensure a safe, efficient and friendly transportation experience for the students and staff of MCISD.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Two year Associates Degree or Technical School in a related field of Diesel Mechanics, preferred
- ASE certification:Any one ASE Bus Certifications S1 through S7, preferred
- Must have a commercial driver's license (CDL) and/or obtain the P and S endorsements, must be insurable
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Demonstrated ability of successfully completing assigned tasks and responsibilities
- Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance and repair
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
- Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years working on diesel/gas engines and air brakes
- Minimum 2 years working on Carrier A/C systems, preferred
- Minimum 3 years working as a Mechanic Foreman, Mechanic Supervisor, or Lead Mechanic
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Evaluates mechanical problem in vehicles using diagnostic equipment without requiring supervision.
- Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmission, suspensions, etc.
- Checks and repairs electrical and cooling systems.
- Installs heaters and similar accessories.
- Does welding and performs minor body work.
- Estimates time and materials required to perform major repairs.
- Analyzes engine performance and perform tune-ups as needed.
- Creates and sustains preventive vehicle maintenance and repair programs.
- Maintains accurate, updated preventive maintenance records.
- Operates tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
- Helps keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correct to supervisor immediately.
- Operates buses and vehicles as needed.
- Works irregular hours as needed.
- Maintains accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
- Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Performs other duties as requested by the Director for Transportation.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical and Mental Demands:
Must be able to pass the District's physical stress teste and the DOT drug test. Work will consist of moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Environmental conditions will be outdoor and indoor, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. There will be exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
