Job Summary:
The Diesel Application Engineer will deliver advanced diesel engine system integration solutions that meet our customer needs. This role ensures proper installation, functionality, and operation of OEM diesel application within complex industrial equipment. Must be able to work under minimal supervision of the department manager.
Essential Job Duties:
  • Define product scope via sales order, rough sketches, or verbal instructions.
  • Develop and validate engine-to-system integration layouts, including cooling, intake, exhaust/aftertreatment, fuel, lubrication, and control systems.
  • Ensure diesel engines are properly matched to driven equipment, considering power curves, duty cycles, load requirements, and environmental conditions.
  • Develop and manage installation documents, electrical schematics, and validation procedures.
  • Expertise in diesel control systems, including ECM/ECU calibration basics, CANbus communication, J1939 protocols, and system diagnostics.
  • Integrate engine control modules (ECM/ECU) with machine-level control systems, including CANbus communication, safety interlocks, and operational logic.
  • Conduct system-level performance analysis, verifying thermal management, vibration, and acoustics meet design criteria.
  • Emissions regulations knowledge (EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V, CARB) and certification testing.
  • System-level troubleshooting of engine operation within the equipment, including load response, transient performance, and fault detection.
  • Manage BOMs, validation reports, and compliance requirements on diesel-powered products.
  • Support design release process, submittals, certification testing, and production release.
  • Lead customer-facing project management efforts aligned with sales order timelines.
  • Coordinate and manage simultaneous projects, sustaining and new product development.
  • Act as a diesel ambassador by defining and promoting diesel system integration best practices.

Additional Job Duties:
  • Support production and field commissioning of diesel engine installations.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting of diesel systems, related to electrical and controls.
  • Define retrofit kits, system upgrades, and modifications to ensure performance or lifecycle.
  • Provide support for sales, service, cost estimates, design consultation, and installations.
  • Identify alternate integration methods or components to reduce cost, lead time, or supply risk.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior team members and supporting departments.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering; BSME preferred.
  • 7+ years' experience in diesel applications, system integration, or related mechanical/electrical design.
  • Strong understanding of diesel engine performance, duty cycles, and system-level operation.
  • Hands-on experience with integration of diesel subsystems (cooling, fuel, exhaust/after treatment, intake, lubrication, and electrical/controls).
  • Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to travel up to 10% to job sites.

Preferred Skills:
  • Advanced 3D CAD modeling (CREO, Windchill, or equivalent); skilled in assembly and detailed drawings.
  • Strong background in thermal, vibration, and acoustic system analysis.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with a customer-first focus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Physical Demands:
  • Exert force of 50-100 lbs. occasionally and 25-50 lbs. frequently, 10-20 lbs. constantly.
