What is dialogue editing?

Dialogue editing is the process of cleaning, organizing, and enhancing dialogue audio tracks for film, television, or other media productions. This involves removing unwanted noise, matching audio levels, syncing dialogue to the picture, and sometimes replacing or repairing poor-quality recordings. Dialogue editors ensure that the spoken words are clear, consistent, and seamlessly integrated with the rest of the soundtrack. Their work is essential for creating a professional and immersive audio experience for audiences.

How does a dialogue editor typically collaborate with sound designers and re-recording mixers during post-production?

Dialogue editors work closely with sound designers and re-recording mixers to ensure the spoken content is clear, consistent, and integrates seamlessly with other audio elements. This collaboration often involves sharing session files, discussing creative directions, and addressing any technical challenges such as noise reduction or ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) integration. Regular communication is essential, as dialogue editors must ensure their edits align with the broader sound design and the final mix, often participating in review sessions and providing quick revisions as needed. This teamwork helps achieve a polished audio track that supports the story and meets the project's artistic goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dialogue editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dialogue Editor, you need expertise in audio editing, a strong ear for detail, and knowledge of sound post-production workflows, often supported by formal training in audio engineering or film production. Proficiency with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Avid Pro Tools, noise reduction plugins, and synchronization tools is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate with directors and sound teams set standout editors apart. These skills ensure clean, cohesive dialogue tracks that enhance storytelling and maintain audio quality in film, television, or other media.

What is the difference between Dialogue Editing vs Sound Editing?

Dialogue Editing primarily involves refining and cleaning dialogue recordings to ensure clarity and synchronization, while Sound Editing encompasses a broader range of audio elements, including effects and music. Both roles are essential in post-production, often overlapping but with distinct focuses.

How much does a dialogue editor make?

A dialogue editor's salary varies depending on experience, location, and project scope, but typically ranges from $40,000 to $100,000 annually. Entry-level editors may earn less, while experienced professionals working on major productions can earn higher wages, often supplemented by freelance opportunities and overtime work. Proficiency with editing software and sound design skills are important for higher-paying roles.

How to be a dialogue editor?

A dialogue editor is responsible for assembling, editing, and synchronizing dialogue recordings for film or television. Key skills include proficiency with editing software like Pro Tools, strong attention to detail, and understanding of sound design and ADR processes. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions and building a portfolio can help establish a career in this field.

Job description

The Opportunity
Our Android mobile team is part of the Adobe Video organization, where we build video creation and editing experiences for storytellers across desktop, mobile, and web. We move fast, care deeply about craft, and believe the best products come from engineers who think like product owners.
Are you a Senior Android Engineer who leads with judgment across code, product, and design? Do you push back on specs that aren't right - and help define better ones? If you ship high-quality Android experiences, know how to leverage AI tools to accelerate your work, and bring genuine taste and instinct to every feature you own, we'd love to meet you!
What You'll Do
We work end-to-end, and so will you. In this role, you'll own complex Android features from interaction design through engineering and production. You'll partner with Product, Design, and Engineering leaders to shape and refine product requirements using your technical and UX instincts - bringing a point of view, not just implementation.
You'll use AI-assisted and agentic coding tools to accelerate delivery, applying strong judgment to direct AI sessions, evaluate output critically, and refactor where needed. We expect you to make confident scope and priority calls that balance craft, velocity, and user impact - and to mentor peers while maintaining high standards across the codebase.
We ship, learn, and improve: you'll test assumptions early, iterate on real feedback, and treat every release as an opportunity to raise the bar on usability, performance, and creative outcomes.
What We're Looking For
You'll need:
  • 10+ years shipping Android applications
  • Deep proficiency in Android Java and/or Kotlin.
  • Strong expertise in multi-threading, memory management, and performance profiling
  • Product instinct and UX sensibility - you know the Google's Material Design guidelines deeply, notice when an interaction feels off, and can articulate why it matters
  • Comfort with ambiguity; you're energized by finding the right answer, not just implementing a given one
  • Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools - including agentic coding workflows - with the ability to direct and orchestrate AI sessions effectively and critically evaluate and validate generated output
  • Clear, precise communication - written and verbal - across technical and product contexts
  • A deep understanding of mobile video editing workflows - or the drive to develop it fast

Even Better If You Have
Experience with Jetpack Compose, Media3 and video/multimedia development or a track record of influencing product or design decisions rather than just implementing them. Familiarity with design systems or prototyping tools like Figma - enough for a real dialogue with designers - is a plus, as is experience building creative or video production tools or using video editing apps.
Why Adobe Video?
We offer a small-team environment with big ownership - you'll work at the intersection of world-class creative software and AI-augmented engineering. We invest in our people with industry-leading benefits, including comprehensive health coverage, generous equity, flexible time off, and access to Adobe's full suite of creative tools. We believe diverse perspectives make our products better, and we're committed to building a team where everyone can do the best work of their careers.
Are you ready to shape tools used by millions of creators worldwide? We'd love to hear from you!
