What You Will Do
The Space Electronics & Signal Processing (ISR-4) Group is seeking an experienced and innovative engineer to join our highly collaborative leadership team! Los Alamos National Laboratory's Intelligence & Space Research (ISR) Division designs, builds, delivers, and exploits innovative ground- and space-based measurement systems and provides unique analysis and interpretation of data from these systems. We succeed through our cohesive, interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists working within a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. Our projects range from cutting edge scientific explorations expanding our knowledge of the universe, to ensuring national and global security. ISR's 400+ instruments fly on over 200 satellites, including numerous NASA missions like Voyager, which has left our solar system, and the last two Mars Rovers.
The ISR-4 Deputy Group Leader (DGL) will work closely with the ISR-4 Group Leader (GL) and is a key member of the ISR division leadership team, providing scientific, technical, and operational leadership along with management oversight for a group of over 40 full time technical staff members. The DGL will lead strategic initiatives benefiting ISR-4 staff, capabilities, and project missions, and proactively address tactical needs as they arise across areas ranging from facilities management to dynamic staffing needs. The GL and DGL along with five team leaders form the ISR-4 Group Leadership Team which is responsible for developing and implementing a vision and collaborations to sustain ISR-4 into the future. This DGL position offers the opportunity to continue performing technical work in a half-time capacity providing the balance between growth in management and contributing directly to project deliverables.
The DGL will be expected to partner with the Group Leader to:
  • Develop and implement the strategic direction of the group and the electronics design capability in ISR Division.
    • Mentor, coach, and build effective teams, with particular emphasis on individual staff career development.
    • Marshal resources and investments for development and sustainment of the group's technical capabilities and serve as a resource for domain expertise across Los Alamos National Laboratory.
  • Work with the ISR Division Leadership Team, program offices, project leaders, and key stakeholders to provide oversight, support, and coordination of work by ensuring safety and security of the workforce.
  • Manage workforce and group administration, including performance and salary management, staffing plan development, leading hiring committees, group financial oversight, facility and specialized equipment sustainment and modernization, and processes development to ensure all staff adhere to safety and security requirements.

Security Clearance
Ability and desire to obtain Q clearance, which generally requires U.S. citizenship.
Education/Experience:
Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Degree in a STEM field preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience designing, building, testing, and/or delivering hardware for space applications.
  • Familiarity with the administration of operational and administrative policies and procedures at LANL.
  • Prior record of program development, development of proposals, marketing of capabilities, and growth of customer relationships.
  • Prior experience supervising and leading multidisciplinary teams of individuals with diverse backgrounds.
  • Active Q/SCI clearance/access

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Please refer to Policy Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.
Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
