What is DevOps?

DevOps refers to a combination of philosophies, tools, and practices that help to promote an organization's ability to deliver applications and services quickly while improving products at an increased speed over companies that use traditional software development. The increased speed assists organizations in better serving their clients and customers and therefore compete more effectively in the market. Essentially, this model puts development and operations teams together so that engineers can work through the lifecycle of an application and not feel saddled into a single function or skill set. This helps to ensure quality applications and increase development speeds.

What does a DevOps engineer do?

DevOps is a set of practices that combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to shorten the software development lifecycle and deliver high-quality applications continuously. DevOps engineers collaborate with developers and IT staff to automate, integrate, and monitor processes, focusing on continuous integration, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code. Their responsibilities include managing deployment pipelines, automating infrastructure provisioning, ensuring system reliability, and facilitating communication between teams. By improving collaboration and automating workflows, DevOps engineers help organizations deliver software faster and more reliably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps engineer?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer, you need a solid background in software development and IT operations, typically supported by experience with automation, scripting, and cloud platforms. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and cloud services like AWS or Azure, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer), is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and communication skills set outstanding DevOps professionals apart. These competencies are crucial for streamlining development pipelines, ensuring reliable deployments, and fostering effective collaboration between development and operations teams.

What are some common challenges DevOps professionals face when integrating new tools into existing workflows?

DevOps professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between new tools and legacy systems, resistance to change from team members, and ensuring proper security configurations. Successful integration requires thorough testing, clear documentation, and close collaboration with development and operations teams. Addressing these challenges can lead to smoother deployments and more efficient workflows, making adaptability and strong communication skills essential in this role.

What is the difference between Devops vs System Administrator?

AspectDevopsSystem Administrator
Required credentialsCertifications like AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, LinuxCertifications like CompTIA Linux+, Microsoft Certified
Work environmentCollaborative, development-focused teams, often AgileOperational, maintenance-focused, on-premises or cloud
Employer usageTech companies, startups, cloud service providersEnterprises, data centers, IT departments
Common search intentAutomation, CI/CD, cloud deploymentServer management, network setup, troubleshooting

Devops and System Administrators share overlapping skills in Linux, scripting, and cloud platforms. However, Devops focuses on automating development and deployment processes, while System Administrators primarily manage and maintain IT infrastructure. Both roles are essential in modern IT environments but serve different operational purposes.

Is DevOps heavy coding?

DevOps professionals typically write some code to automate processes, manage infrastructure, and develop deployment pipelines, but the role also involves system administration, scripting, and tool configuration. The amount of coding varies depending on the organization and specific responsibilities, with some roles requiring more scripting and automation than traditional programming. Overall, DevOps emphasizes automation, collaboration, and continuous integration and delivery practices.

Is DevOps still in demand in 2026?

DevOps remains in high demand in 2026 due to organizations' ongoing need for automation, continuous integration, and cloud infrastructure management. Skills in tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure continue to be valuable for DevOps professionals. The role is expected to grow as companies prioritize agile development and operational efficiency.

What does a DevOps job do?

A DevOps job involves combining software development and IT operations to improve the deployment, automation, and management of applications. DevOps professionals use tools like Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes to streamline development cycles, ensure system reliability, and facilitate continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD).

Position Description: The DevOps / Platform Engineer will be responsible for ensuring Caliola's on-premises and cloud infrastructure is operational, maintained, backed up, hardened, and aligned with program and security requirements. This role sits within Caliola's IT & Cybersecurity team and supports engineering teams working across unclassified and secured environments where infrastructure, tooling, build workflows, scanning, configuration, and documentation are often customized to meet specific customer, accreditation, and mission requirements.

This is not a traditional commercial DevOps role focused primarily on large-scale automated deployment pipelines. Caliola's environments are complex because of security requirements, program-specific configurations, controlled development workflows, legacy software constraints, accreditation needs, and classified operations. This individual will resolve infrastructure issues through Caliola's ticketing system, communicate regularly with engineering teams to understand their needs, and help develop, deploy, and maintain compliant solutions, tools, and initiatives in support of Caliola's development environments.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Maintain Caliola's on-premises and cloud development infrastructure including but not limited to Linux servers, virtualization resources, code repository infrastructure, and CI/CD infrastructure.
  • Support development environments across unclassified and classified programs where tooling, workflows, system configurations, documentation, and approval processes may be customized to meet customer, security, accreditation, mission and System Security Plan (SSP) requirements.
  • Support the operations, maintenance, and sustainment of systems within Caliola's security boundaries, including configuration control, access control, vulnerability remediation, backup validation, evidence collection, and continuous compliance activities.
  • Build, operate, and continuously improve Proxmox-based virtualization platforms, including VM provisioning, lifecycle management, backup/recovery, secure baseline configurations and high availability.
  • Assist developers in building, scanning, and testing systems through automated pipeline integration and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) processes.
  • Work with engineering teams to troubleshoot and address issues using an IT ticketing system.
  • Establish monitoring, logging, and metrics strategies (Prometheus, Loki, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, manual, etc.) for production, pre-production systems.
  • Update and patch on-premises infrastructure.
  • Developing real-time monitoring and or auditing tools for the engineering or information technologies (IT) organizations.
  • Lead the adoption of immutable infrastructure principles, secure baseline images, and reproducible environments (development VMs, Threatlocker best practices, development containers).
  • Spec, quote, order, and deploy new workstations and servers based on project requirements and regulations to support Caliola's development teams.
  • Maintain technical documents describing resources available to engineers, maintenance practices & schedule, and infrastructure architecture.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

What We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Python, Bash, and/or similar coding language.
  • 3 - 10+ years of professional experience in Linux systems engineering, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD, build, scan, and release tooling such as GitLab, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar.
  • Experience building and deploying Docker images and containers.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage challenging situations with grace and professionalism.
  • Ability to travel periodically, with an emphasis on critical meetings at key customer sites across the United States.
  • Must be able to obtain a US Top-Secret security clearance.

What We Value:

  • Experience supporting systems governed by a System Security Plan, CMMC Level 2, NIST SP 800-171, 32 CFR Part 117/NISPOM, RMF, or comparable assessment/accreditation frameworks.
  • Certifications or equivalent experience in Linux administration, cybersecurity, virtualization, cloud infrastructure, or secure systems operations, such as Azure, Security+ or similar.
