What is Terraform?

A Terraform job typically refers to a role where an individual manages infrastructure as code (IaC) using HashiCorp Terraform. Responsibilities include writing and maintaining Terraform configurations, automating infrastructure deployment, and ensuring cloud resources are efficiently managed. Terraform engineers often work with cloud providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud to provision and manage scalable infrastructure. Strong knowledge of coding, version control, and CI/CD practices is usually required.

What does a Terraform engineer do?

As a Terraform Engineer, your typical day involves writing, reviewing, and optimizing Terraform configurations to provision and manage cloud infrastructure efficiently. You’ll collaborate closely with developers, DevOps teams, and cloud architects to automate deployments, troubleshoot infrastructure issues, and maintain compliance with organizational standards. Regularly updating documentation, participating in code reviews, and monitoring infrastructure health are also important aspects of the role. These responsibilities ensure that cloud resources are managed effectively, securely, and in alignment with business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Terraform position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Terraform Engineer, you need a solid understanding of infrastructure-as-code concepts, cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP), and experience writing and maintaining Terraform configurations in HCL. Job description

Senior Developer / Data Engineer - SQL & Terraform

Remote role

Compensation: $55 - $65 per hour

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client is launching a new Enterprise Data Platform (EDP), an AI-ready data foundation built on a medallion architecture in BigQuery. This platform will ingest data from all DaVita source systems—both on-premises and cloud—leveraging a modern Google Cloud Platform (GCP) stack including Dataflow, Dataform, Terraform, and CI/CD automation. Data governance is managed through Google Knowledge Catalog (formerly Dataplex). This is a newly funded initiative with strong momentum and a clear path to team growth as internal funding is approved. As a Senior Developer / Data Engineer, you will play a critical role in building and optimizing data pipelines, ensuring robust infrastructure, and collaborating closely with technical leads to establish standards and best practices in a fast-paced, newly established platform team.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Develop and optimize data pipelines and transformations within the BigQuery medallion architecture
  • Write and tune complex SQL queries for large-scale data transformation and validation
  • Build and maintain Terraform-based infrastructure to support pipeline deployment
  • Implement and manage data ingestion from on-prem and cloud source systems using GCP tools (Dataflow, Dataform)
  • Collaborate with technical leads on pipeline standards, testing, and CI/CD automation
  • Ensure data governance and cataloging through Google Knowledge Catalog (Dataplex)
  • Participate in technical Q&A sessions and communicate solutions clearly to panel and team members
  • Contribute to a culture of hands-on technical excellence and proactive problem-solving in a newly established team
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Expert-level SQL skills: complex queries, performance tuning, and data validation (must be recent and hands-on)
  • Strong hands-on experience with Terraform in a GCP environment, including authoring and owning modules (not just running existing ones)
  • Production experience with Dataflow and/or Dataform for pipeline development (hands-on, not just conceptual)
  • Experience developing and optimizing data pipelines within BigQuery medallion architecture
  • Familiarity with CI/CD automation and pipeline standards
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, newly established platform team
  • Experience with Google Knowledge Catalog / Dataplex (nice to have)
  • Background in healthcare or other highly regulated data environments (nice to have)
  • Clear, confident communication skills, especially in technical Q&A settings (nice to have)
  • Demonstrated ability to acknowledge unfamiliarity rather than guess through technical questions
WHAT WILL DISQUALIFY A CANDIDATE
  • Lack of recent, hands-on delivery with SQL or Terraform (theory-only backgrounds will not be considered)
  • Medium-level skills in SQL, Terraform, or Dataflow/Dataform (the bar is set at strong, hands-on expertise)
  • Guessing through technical questions instead of acknowledging unfamiliarity
INTERVIEW PROCESS
  • Panel interview with three client technical leaders
  • One-hour session, primarily technical Q&A
  • Priority given to hands-on Dataflow, Dataform, Terraform, and SQL experience over architectural or theoretical backgrounds
