Job description

Job Description:

Providing for loved ones, planning rewarding retirements, saving enough for whatever lies ahead - our policyholders count on us to be there when it matters most. It's a big ask, but it's one that we have the power to deliver when we work together. We collaborate and innovate - pushing one another to transform not just Pacific Life, but the entire industry for the better. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. Pacific Life is more than a job, it's a career with purpose. It's a career where you have the support, balance, and resources to make a positive impact on the future - including your own.

We are actively seeking a talented Senior DevOps Engineer to join our Illustrations Platform Team which supports our Consumer Markets Division (CMD), on-site at our state-of-the-art Newport Beach headquarters.

The Illustrations Platform Team serves as the technical backbone of Pacific Life's illustration systems. We provide the infrastructure, tooling, deployment processes, operational support, and shared services that enable product teams to deliver high-quality software faster, more securely, and more reliably.

Our platform includes mission-critical web applications, desktop applications, APIs, integrations, and supporting services that are used throughout the life insurance sales and illustration process. We are seeking an experienced DevOps professional who thrives at the intersection of software engineering, platform operations, automation, reliability, and security.

This role combines software engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, security, and operational ownership.

Success in this position comes from improving the reliability, security, deployment experience, and developer productivity of a business-critical platform while also contributing hands-on .NET development when appropriate.

This is not a traditional feature-development role. While you will work in Visual Studio, C#, VB.NET, SQL Server, and Azure DevOps, the primary focus is ensuring that our platform builds cleanly, deploys reliably, operates securely, and remains highly available for the business and our distribution partners.

How you'll help us move forward:

  • Own and continuously improve Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, release orchestration, deployment automation, and build engineering processes for web applications, desktop applications, APIs, and supporting services.

  • Own source control strategy and governance across the Illustrations Platform, including Git administration, branching strategies, repository standards, and developer enablement.

  • Coordinate production deployments, including scheduled evening and weekend release windows, and validate post-deployment application health.

  • Serve as a senior technical responder for production incidents, driving triage, mitigation, communication, root cause analysis, and long-term corrective actions.

  • Drive improvements in platform reliability, scalability, resiliency, performance, and recovery capabilities.

  • Improve operational observability through monitoring, logging, alerting, dashboards, and diagnostics.

  • Maintain and support application platform infrastructure across IIS, Windows Server, application pools, SSL certificates, service accounts, scheduled tasks, and supporting services.

  • Partner with Infrastructure, Security, Networking, and Enterprise Architecture teams on hosting, cloud, networking, identity, and environment changes.

  • Own the platform's security posture in partnership with Security, including:

    • Vulnerability remediation

    • Dependency management

    • GitHub Advanced Security findings

    • Static code analysis remediation

    • Certificate lifecycle management

    • Service account governance

    • SSDLC compliance activities

  • Build PowerShell and C# automation solutions that reduce manual operational effort and improve developer productivity.

  • Drive modernization initiatives including source control improvements, deployment automation, infrastructure automation, and platform engineering best practices.

  • Produce technical documentation, operational runbooks, and knowledge-transfer materials that ensure operational sustainability across the team.

  • Write and maintain production .NET applications, services, and automation tools that directly improve platform reliability, supportability, security, or integration health.

  • Participate in production support activities, including after-hours incident response and occasional weekend deployment windows.

The experience you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience using C# and the .NET platform.

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience administering and supporting Azure DevOps, including pipelines, releases, repositories, and deployment automation.

  • Strong Git experience, including repository administration, branching strategies, pull request workflows, and source-control governance.

  • Experience supporting business-critical production applications in a DevOps, Platform Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Application Support capacity.

  • Strong PowerShell scripting and automation experience.

  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.

  • Working knowledge of:

    • IIS

    • Windows Server

    • SQL Server

    • Application deployment practices

    • Certificate management

  • Experience with GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS), SonarQube, JFrog, or similar security and code quality tools.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure cloud services and cloud-hosted application environments.

  • Understanding of networking fundamentals, including:

    • Load balancing

    • SSL/TLS

    • DNS

    • Authentication and SSO technologies

  • Experience with monitoring, logging, observability, and operational health tooling.

  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • A calm, professional, ownership-oriented mindset when supporting mission-critical systems.

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Experience leading or participating in enterprise source-control modernization efforts, including TFVC-to-Git migrations, repository consolidation, and branching strategy design.

  • Experience implementing DevSecOps practices within enterprise software environments.

  • Experience driving platform reliability, resiliency, and operational excellence initiatives.

  • Experience supporting highly available customer-facing applications.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC), configuration management, or infrastructure automation practices.

  • Experience supporting financial services, insurance, annuity, or other highly regulated industry platforms.

  • Proven ability to build credibility and influence across development, infrastructure, security, architecture, and business teams.

  • A passion for operational excellence, automation, continuous improvement, and building systems that last.
