What is a DevOps manager?

A DevOps Manager is a professional who leads and oversees the implementation of DevOps practices within an organization. They are responsible for bridging the gap between development and operations teams, ensuring smooth collaboration, and automating processes to improve software delivery speed and reliability. DevOps Managers also manage the infrastructure, monitor system performance, and ensure that security and compliance standards are met. Their role is crucial in fostering a culture of continuous integration, deployment, and improvement.

What does a DevOps manager do?

As a DevOps manager, your job is to oversee both a software development process and its continued operation after release. In this role, you may determine how or if to integrate cloud systems into your development plan, evaluate performance on each operating system or environment, and otherwise help streamline software delivery. Many DevOps managers perform a variety of tasks, ranging from managing teams to testing products or setting up contracts with customers. This makes flexibility and the ability to adapt to different needs in a time-sensitive environment essential to your success in this field. Many companies are still deciding how to integrate DevOps into their overall planning and structure, so the precise duties of your job may change over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Manager, you need a strong background in systems administration, cloud infrastructure, automation, and continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD), typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure, and certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Azure DevOps Engineer are highly valued. Exceptional leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help you manage cross-functional teams and drive process improvements. These competencies are critical for ensuring seamless software delivery, operational efficiency, and alignment between development and IT operations.

What are some of the common challenges a DevOps manager faces when leading cross-functional teams?

A DevOps Manager frequently encounters challenges in aligning development, operations, and QA teams towards shared goals, especially in organizations transitioning to DevOps practices. Managing communication gaps, balancing competing priorities, and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement are key hurdles. Additionally, staying current with rapidly evolving tools and technologies while ensuring the team's skills remain up-to-date can be demanding. Addressing resistance to change and ensuring security and compliance within automated pipelines are also common challenges in this role.

Job description

Who we are

You might know us as the inventors of the bath bomb, but there's more to this great-smelling, partly employee-owned, family-run company than pioneering cosmetics. We believe our business should put more back into the world than it takes and demonstrate that capitalism can be a force for good. We put our people first and fight cruel practices like animal testing, promote regeneration, and show that it is what's inside that counts - whether that's an ingredient in a product, or the minerals in a smartphone.ย

LUSH Digital offers a range of exciting online and in store experiences for our customers. Developers of many disciplines are responsible for creating and developing new innovations in technology, as well as providing and maintaining a global digital estate across multiple platforms and devices.ย

We love open source! The Cloud Native Computing Foundation is always our first port of call when a requirement for a new tool comes up. Whenever we can, the code we produce is made public for all to use.

Overview:

As an Intermediate DevOps Engineer, you will join our collaborative team to support, operate, and enhance our global digital infrastructure. You will work closely with our engineers to ensure our platforms are reliable, secure, and performant. A key strategic priority for LUSH Digital is our transition away from big-tech reliance; you will play a key role in this journey by implementing and managing the open-source tools that empower our engineering team. We are looking for a proactive engineer passionate about automation, reliability, and modern cloud-native practices to help support our digital team globally.

  • Assist in maintaining and optimizing GitLab CI/CD and ArgoCD pipelines, ensuring developers can deploy code efficiently and securely.
  • Monitor system health using our observability stack (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki), creating alerts and dashboards to track performance and catch potential issues early.
  • Operational Support: Participate in an on-call rotation to support our 24/7 global production environment, triaging and resolving incidents alongside the broader engineering team.
  • Partner with the software engineering team to support the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), assisting with branching strategies and deployment workflows.
  • Adhere to and apply security best practices across infrastructure configurations and deployment pipelines to keep our platform compliant and safe.

You bring the followingย QUALIFICATIONS:ย

  • Hands-on experience with containerisation/containerisation orchestration technologies, including Docker, Kubernetes and Helm.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, particularly Gitlab CI/CD and ArgoCD.
  • Working knowledge of application profiling and observability tools such as Loki, Prometheus, and Grafana
  • Experience with Cloudflare or another DNS provider
  • Experience supporting services in a high-availability production environment (Our reach is global, with 24/7 operation)
