Devops Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Manager, you need a strong background in systems administration, cloud infrastructure, automation, and continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD), typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure, and certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Azure DevOps Engineer are highly valued. Exceptional leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help you manage cross-functional teams and drive process improvements. These competencies are critical for ensuring seamless software delivery, operational efficiency, and alignment between development and IT operations.

What are some of the common challenges a DevOps Manager faces when leading cross-functional teams?

A DevOps Manager frequently encounters challenges in aligning development, operations, and QA teams towards shared goals, especially in organizations transitioning to DevOps practices. Managing communication gaps, balancing competing priorities, and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement are key hurdles. Additionally, staying current with rapidly evolving tools and technologies while ensuring the team's skills remain up-to-date can be demanding. Addressing resistance to change and ensuring security and compliance within automated pipelines are also common challenges in this role.

What is a DevOps Manager?

A DevOps Manager is a professional who leads and oversees the implementation of DevOps practices within an organization. They are responsible for bridging the gap between development and operations teams, ensuring smooth collaboration, and automating processes to improve software delivery speed and reliability. DevOps Managers also manage the infrastructure, monitor system performance, and ensure that security and compliance standards are met. Their role is crucial in fostering a culture of continuous integration, deployment, and improvement.

What Does a DevOps Manager Do?

As a DevOps manager, your job is to oversee both a software development process and its continued operation after release. In this role, you may determine how or if to integrate cloud systems into your development plan, evaluate performance on each operating system or environment, and otherwise help streamline software delivery. Many DevOps managers perform a variety of tasks, ranging from managing teams to testing products or setting up contracts with customers. This makes flexibility and the ability to adapt to different needs in a time-sensitive environment essential to your success in this field. Many companies are still deciding how to integrate DevOps into their overall planning and structure, so the precise duties of your job may change over time.

What is the difference between Devops Manager vs Devops Engineer?

Job description

Why Verifone
For more than 30 years Verifone has established a remarkable record of leadership in the electronic payment technology industry. Verifone has one of the leading electronic payment solutions brands and is one of the largest providers of electronic payment systems worldwide.
Verifone has a diverse, dynamic and fast paced work environment in which employees are focused on results and have opportunities to excel. We take pride in the fact that we work with leading retailers, merchants, banks, and third party partners to invent and deliver innovative payments solution around the world. We strive for excellence in our products and services, and are obsessed with customer happiness. Across the globe, Verifone employees are leading the payments industry through experience, innovation, and an ambitious spirit. Whether it's developing the next platform of secure payment systems or searching for new ways to bring electronic payments to new markets, the team at Verifone is dedicated to the success of our customers, partners and investors. It is this passion for innovation that drives each one of our employees for personal and professional success.
Verifone is proudly an in-office work culture as we see immense benefits to career development and business results from our colleagues being physically co-located. Currently, we do allow a hybrid work schedule but we regularly revisit our attendance policy.
What's Exciting About the Role
Verifone's Engineering Team operates global payment gateway infrastructure across global regions spanning the Americas, APAC, and EMEA. We're looking for a DevOps Engineer to join a team responsible for keeping our Americas Tier-1 payment platforms healthy, observable, and resilient. You'll work alongside platform developers to proactively eliminate the conditions that cause production incidents, build automation that scales across engineering teams, and drive continuous improvement across our observability and deployment practices.
This role is based in our Atlanta, GA (Alpharetta) office. In line with Verifone's workplace policy, you'll be expected to work from the office a minimum of three days per week.
Job Responsibilities
  • Proactively identify and remediate platform risks across critical payment processing services before they escalate to major incidents, working directly from post-incident findings and root cause analyses.
  • Onboard services onto observability platforms such as New Relic, establishing dashboards, alerts, and service-level baselines that give engineering teams real-time visibility into service health.
  • Own Helm chart configuration for containerized applications running on AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service, tuning resource limits, health check probes, autoscaling policies, and availability settings to prevent production incidents before they occur.
  • Build and maintain internal engineering tooling covering software deployment pipelines, certificate lifecycle automation, and shareable AI-powered developer tools that reduce toil and raise the capability floor across the engineering organization.
  • Develop integrations and automation that connect internal systems and improve engineering workflows at scale, including tooling built on top of large language model APIs.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, providing incident response support for critical payment platforms on a 24/7 basis as required.
  • Partner with incident commanders and software engineers during major incidents to provide platform-level investigation support and drive durable remediation.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of hands-on DevOps or platform engineering experience in a production environment.
  • Strong proficiency with Kubernetes and Helm; experience tuning workloads on managed Kubernetes services such as AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service.
  • Practical observability experience with New Relic or equivalent platforms such as Datadog or Prometheus with Grafana; able to build meaningful dashboards and alert configurations from scratch.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (Python, Go, TypeScript, or similar) with a track record of building automation that other engineers actually use.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and delivery pipelines, GitOps practices, and infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Terraform or Ansible.
  • Experience managing TLS certificates and a working understanding of public key infrastructure in production environments.
  • Comfort participating in on-call rotations and responding to incidents outside of business hours when needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building tooling on top of large language model APIs such as Anthropic Claude or OpenAI.
  • Background in payment processing or financial services infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with service management platforms used for tracking incidents, changes, and requests in enterprise engineering environments.
  • Prior contribution to internal developer platforms or shared engineering tooling.
What Success Looks Like
In your first six months, you will have measurably reduced the incident rate on at least one critical platform, brought one or more services onto an observability platform with meaningful alerting, and shipped at least one piece of automation that other engineers have adopted. You measure your impact not just by the work you complete, but by the incidents that never happen and the time you give back to your peers.
Our Commitment
Verifone is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status. Verifone is also committed to compliance with all fair employment practices regarding citizenship and immigration status.
