What is a DevOps associate?

DevOps Associates are professionals who support the integration of development and operations teams by automating workflows, improving deployment processes, and enhancing collaboration. They typically assist in managing code releases, infrastructure as code, and monitoring systems while ensuring continuous integration and delivery pipelines run smoothly. DevOps Associates often work with cloud platforms, configuration management tools, and scripting languages to optimize software development and deployment cycles. Their role is vital in reducing manual errors, increasing efficiency, and ensuring rapid delivery of high-quality software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Associate, you need a solid understanding of software development, system administration, and automation, often complemented by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Git, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer) is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a collaborative mindset help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and respond to evolving technical needs. These competencies enable seamless integration and deployment processes, improve system reliability, and support agile development cycles.

What are some common challenges faced by DevOps associates when integrating new tools into existing workflows?

DevOps Associates often encounter challenges when integrating new tools, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining security standards, and minimizing downtime during deployment. They must also coordinate closely with both development and operations teams to align on processes and avoid disruptions. Effective communication, thorough testing, and incremental rollouts are key strategies to address these challenges and ensure a smooth transition.

Job description

Join a team that keeps modern cloud data platforms reliable so engineers can deliver features confidently. You will shape secure environments, pipelines, and deployment standards that enable fast, safe releases. This role offers hands-on ownership of a cloud container platform and close collaboration across engineering, product, design, and operations. If you enjoy solving complex reliability problems and mentoring others, this role will be a strong fit.

As a Data Platform DevOps Engineer - Senior Associate within the Enterprise Data Solutions team, you will design, build, and operate secure, stable, and scalable cloud environments that support mission-critical, data-driven applications. You will own the container application platform support model on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and partner with engineering teams to keep environments available, performant, and ready for reliable deployments. You will implement and continuously improve build, test, and deployment pipelines and administer delivery tooling to enable frequent and safe releases. You will drive operational excellence by identifying reliability and performance bottlenecks and enabling optimizations for speed and scalability across services and user interfaces. You will keep critical streaming and relational data dependencies healthy, drive delivery within Agile teams, and grow the engineering talent around you through reusable patterns, clear standards, and hands-on coaching.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate secure, stable, and scalable cloud environments that support mission-critical applications and delivery outcomes for Java/SpringBoot microservices and React micro frontends.
  • Own the AWS ECS application platform support model, partnering with engineering teams to ensure environments are available, performant, and ready for reliable deployments.
  • Implement and continuously improve CI/CD pipelines to streamline build, test, and deployment workflows, enabling frequent and safe releases across environments.
  • Administer and support CI/CD tooling (e.g., Jenkins and Spinnaker) and establish consistent deployment practices across teams and applications.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (engineering, product, design, and operations) to ensure smooth integration and deployment using DevOps practices.
  • Drive operational excellence by identifying reliability/performance bottlenecks and enabling optimization for speed and scalability across services and user interfaces.
  • Support data-in-motion and data-access dependencies used by the application stack (e.g., Kafka and SQL) in partnership with application teams to reduce delivery friction.
  • Contribute to Agile delivery by working within Scrum teams, aligning infra/devops work to sprint goals and delivery commitments.
  • Mentor and enable engineers through standards, reusable pipeline patterns, and hands-on guidance to strengthen DevOps maturity and team delivery.
  • Promote engineering best practices and continuous improvement by contributing to communities of practice and adopting emerging technologies that improve delivery outcomes.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful team culture aligned to JPMorganChase expectations while collaborating across global stakeholders.

Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

  • Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts with 5+ years of applied experience in a DevOps / cloud support / platform engineering capacity.
  • Hands-on expertise with AWS (ECS) and supporting cloud-based applications end-to-end.
  • Strong knowledge of DevOps and CI/CD practices, including pipeline tooling such as Jenkins and Spinnaker.
  • Strong problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and coordinate effectively with globally distributed partners.
  • Highly effective at communicating technical concepts and solutions to operational partners
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum delivery models and working patterns.
  • Working understanding of SQL and Kafka dependencies commonly present in modern service architectures.

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills

  • Experience partnering with application teams building Java/SpringBoot microservices and React micro frontends, to align platform capabilities with application delivery needs.
  • Knowledge of banking operations and data, and/or supporting data-driven product delivery.
  • Ability to support AI-informed user experiences and understand agentic frameworks (prompting, workflows, tools), including Python/Java experience.
