Introduction
We are seeking a motivated and customer-focused Development Services Technician to join our team. This position plays a key role in processing citizen requests for permits, but the responsibilities extend far beyond processing applications. As a Development Services Technician, you will be on a career path toward becoming a Technical Assistant to the Building Official, gaining valuable knowledge and hands-on experience along the way.
We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. In this role, the Development Services Technician is responsible for supporting the permitting process from initial customer contact through permit issuance. You will conduct initial customer interviews, perform quality control checks, and issue a variety of construction-related permits, including building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical.
You will also perform routine records management duties such as researching and maintaining documentation in accordance with the Library of Virginia Records Retention Act. Additional responsibilities include creating permit invoices and processing various forms of payment for both commercial and residential permits.
This position requires keen attention to detail, excellent customer service abilities, and the capacity to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment. It is a key role within the permitting team and provides a strong platform for career growth in building safety and development.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or G.E.D.
Preferences:
  • Experience processing a wide range of customer requests in a fast-paced service environment
  • Experience handling financial transactions and/or creating and processing invoices
  • Experience interacting with customers in multiple formats, including in-person, by phone, and via email
  • Prior experience in permitting, building construction, or other closely related fields
  • Technical data entry experience or familiarity with the EnerGov data management system
  • Experience with or knowledge of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC)

Work Schedule:
This position follows a 37.5-hour work week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This role is eligible for telework under the following conditions:
  • After the first six months of employment, employees may telework one day per week.
  • After successfully achieving Senior Development Services Technician (Tier 3), teleworking may increase to up to two days per week.

Telework arrangements may be adjusted or reverted to in-office scheduling if business needs change.
Special Requirements:
Valid Driver's License - successful completion of a DMV Check.
Starting Salary Range:
$21.14 - $27.00 ($41,223.00 - $52,650)
