Director of Software Engineering at TSI
TSI provides trusted measurement, application guidance, and data analytics solutions that enable customers to make informed decisions. The Director of Software Engineering leads the software organization in support of TSI's digital transformation strategy, delivering scalable, high-quality solutions across embedded systems, desktop, mobile, network, and cloud/SaaS platforms.
As both a people and technical leader, this role is responsible for hiring, coaching, and retaining top engineering talent, and for building the management bench strength needed to scale the organization. This role partners with Product Management, Program Management, Hardware Engineering, and other cross-functional leaders to define and execute product development strategies. The Director ensures teams deliver innovative, high quality, secure, and customer-focused software solutions, using modern architectures, Agile methodologies, and best engineering practices.
The Director oversees multiple teams, including both development and testing, to drive technical excellence, operational efficiency, and organizational growth.
What Will You Do?
In order to grow and build a successful career with TSI, you will:
  • Directly manage a team of Software Engineering supervisors and/or senior engineers (typically 4-8 direct reports), with indirect oversight of 20+ engineers
  • Own hiring strategy, conduct regular 1:1s, set individual development plans, drive career growth conversations for direct reports, manage personnel issues, and lead performance management processes for the software team
  • Build and maintain a strong engineering culture focused on performance, accountability, and continuous learning
  • Coach Software Engineering supervisors on their own people management skills (delegation, feedback, conflict resolution)
  • Manage team structure and org design decisions, including team topology changes, as the org scales
  • Define and execute software development strategy aligned with business and product goals; balance tech debt maintenance and sustaining work with new product development
  • Define software roadmaps across embedded, cloud, desktop, network, and mobile software to maintain high quality, secure products and ensure alignment with customer needs
  • Support ongoing use of Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, and modern engineering practices, including test-driven development
  • Oversee software lifecycle, including architecture, development, testing, release, and sustainment
  • Establish and monitor key performance metrics for quality, delivery, and team productivity
  • Promote reuse, modularity, and maintainability across software platforms
  • Ensure compliance with phase-gate processes, regulatory requirements, and quality standards
  • Collaborate with hardware, marketing, IT, and operations teams on integrated system solutions
  • Support resolution of critical field issues and drive continuous improvement
  • Communicate program status, risks, and tradeoffs to executive leadership
  • Drive innovation in products, leveraging integration of hardware with modern software technologies
  • Develop organizational capabilities through hiring, coaching, mentoring, and succession planning

Supervisory/People Management Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of approximately 6 direct reports and approximately 25 total employees
  • Recruit, hire, and retain a high-performing team
  • Define employee objectives, conduct performance reviews, provide feedback, and make recommendations regarding compensation, promotion, training, and discipline
  • Coach and mentor direct reports
  • Define and execute required training programs to address industry, product, process, and technology training needs

What Do You Need?Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of software development experience
  • 5+ years of supervisory/management experience
  • Strong leadership and organizational development skills
  • Ability to drive technical strategy and align with business objectives
  • Expertise in software architecture, system design, and scalability
  • Familiarity with diverse software technology stacks
  • Experience with Agile methodologies, DevOps, and modern software architectures
  • Experience with embedded systems (C/C++, RTOS/Linux) and/or modern web/cloud stacks
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines
  • Strong communication, cross-functional collaboration, and stakeholder management skills
  • Financial and project management acumen (budgets, timelines, risk management)
  • Commitment to quality, testing, and continuous improvement

Pay & Benefits:
Competitive market salary from $210,000- $230,000 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities may be available and awarded at the discretion of the Company.
