What is the difference between Developer Advocate vs Developer Evangelist?

AspectDeveloper AdvocateDeveloper Evangelist
Required CredentialsTechnical background, often in software development or engineeringSimilar technical skills, often with marketing or communication experience
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with developers, product teams, and marketingFocuses on community engagement, public speaking, and outreach
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, open-source projectsTech companies, community organizations, startups

Both roles require strong technical skills and community engagement. While Developer Advocates focus on bridging developers with products through technical content and support, Developer Evangelists emphasize promoting products via public speaking and community events. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in their primary focus: technical advocacy versus marketing outreach.

How does a Developer Advocate typically balance coding responsibilities with community engagement?

Developer Advocates often split their time between writing code—such as building demos, contributing to open source projects, or improving documentation—and engaging with developer communities through conferences, online forums, and workshops. Finding the right balance can be challenging, as both technical output and strong communication are essential. Many teams encourage Advocates to allocate specific days or hours to focus on coding, while reserving other time for outreach, feedback collection, and content creation. This structure helps Developer Advocates stay technically sharp while remaining deeply connected to their audience and the broader community.

.NET Developer Advocate

JetBrains

Boston, MA • On-site, Remote

$144K - $255K/yr

Full-time

Posted 2 hours ago

Job description

JetBrains makes industry-leading professional IDEs and team software trusted by over 15 million users and 88 Fortune Global Top 100 companies. We're currently looking for a Developer Advocate for .NET technologies. The ideal candidate for this position is a software developer with .NET experience spanning enterprise backend development (including ASP.NET, Entity Framework, and Blazor), some frontend development, and good debugging and testing practices.
We are looking for an experienced, passionate, and open-minded person to join the existing .NET Developer Advocacy team. You'll help strengthen and drive our efforts to promote JetBrains .NET tools to existing and new developers and partners, as well as advise product teams based on industry trends and developer feedback.
In this role, you will:
  • Create content such as blog posts, videos, tutorials, screencasts, sample code, and livestreams. The content will mix product promotion, with a strong focus on explaining how JetBrains products can help developers solve real problems, and industry-related stories that are relevant to .NET developers.
  • Write code, such as samples, or contributing to the product.
  • Inspire new and existing customers with how JetBrains tools can solve real-world development problems.
  • Teach people how to use JetBrains technologies and tools.
  • Speak at conferences and help at booths in order to grow product awareness and educate and inspire potential users.
  • Give talks at JetBrains and partner events.
  • Support the JetBrains Business Development team with customer visits, product demos, and technical insight.
  • Build relationships and communication channels between selected customers and JetBrains.
  • Interact and engage with our B2B and B2C users.
  • Provide feedback to product teams.
  • Provide some technical support via various channels.
  • Work with and support wider JetBrains technologies and products, such as AI Assistant and Junie, as well as have an awareness of tools such as JetBrains TeamCity and YouTrack.

While game dev experience is not essential or the main focus of the role, the .NET team owns game development at JetBrains. The role will occasionally require creating content and providing support for JetBrains products in game development scenarios.
We'd love to have you on our team if you have:
  • At least 5 years of development experience.
  • Knowledge of .NET languages and technologies.
  • Knowledge of .NET industry needs.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to tell a compelling story about a technology.
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English.
  • The confidence and ability to speak in public, give in-person and remote presentations, facilitate Q&A sessions, and provide product demos.
  • Strong creative skills in writing, video creation, and editing, with the ability to produce various types of content covering JetBrains-related technologies in the .NET ecosystem.
  • The ability to quickly understand and experiment with new technologies.
  • A willingness to travel.
  • Self-organization, goal-setting, and time-management skills.
  • Knowledge of JetBrains tooling, such as JetBrains Rider or ReSharper - with knowledge of dotTrace and dotMemory being advantageous.
We'd be especially thrilled if you have:
  • An established reputation in a development community.
  • Experience with JetBrains tools.
  • Experience in developer advocacy.
  • Some familiarity with other programming languages, e.g. F#, C++, or Kotlin.
  • A background working in an environment with highly distributed, diverse teams.
  • A portfolio from speaking (conference recordings) and screencasts - please submit this with your application.

At JetBrains, our Developer Advocacy team's mission is to make developers better. Candidates need to be self-starters: take initiative, plan tasks, coordinate across teams, and finish projects by themselves with light supervision.
As we recognize that not everyone has every skill when starting a new role, the team will provide mentoring and guidance.
If you meet these requirements, and more importantly, if you love JetBrains tools and believe in the work we do, this might be the position for you!
