Controls Startup Technician
Location: Durham, NC 27705
Department: Controls Team
Reports To: Controls Team Leader
Pay Rate: $34.00 - $40.00 per hour (based on experience)
Position Summary
The Controls Startup Technician is responsible for the startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and service of building automation and control systems. This position performs final system checkout, program downloads, point-to-point verification, and field troubleshooting to ensure control systems operate as designed. The ideal candidate will have experience with Tridium, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, and HVAC control systems.
Key Responsibilities
  • Download and implement control programs to field devices as provided by the Engineering team.
  • Perform point-to-point checkout and verification of all control devices and associated third-party equipment.
  • Conduct startup, commissioning, and final system testing of control systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair control wiring, communication, and programming issues.
  • Complete service calls and provide ongoing technical support for existing customer sites.
  • Terminate and wire control panels in accordance with project requirements.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to installation technicians and project teams.
  • Assist Test and Balance personnel during system startup and verification.
  • Complete service documentation and startup reports accurately and on time.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety standards and applicable electrical codes.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of five (5) years of controls installation, startup, commissioning, or related experience, or equivalent accredited technical training.
  • Experience with Tridium platforms; AX and/or N4 certification preferred.
  • Experience with Honeywell and Johnson Controls (JCI) field controllers is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of ladder logic and control programming concepts.
  • Knowledge of electronic wiring practices and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of electrical circuits and low-voltage control systems.
  • Familiarity with state and local electrical codes.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical HVAC systems and equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must possess required hand tools and electrical testing meters.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, including standing, climbing, lifting, and working in commercial and industrial environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Tridium AX and/or N4 Certification.
  • Experience commissioning commercial HVAC control systems.
  • Building Automation System (BAS) startup and service experience.
  • Knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, and other building automation communication protocols.
