What is a Designated Mechanic Examiner?

A Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME) is an individual authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to administer practical tests to applicants seeking an Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) mechanic certificate. DMEs are experienced aviation maintenance professionals who have met specific qualifications and are designated to evaluate the skills and knowledge of mechanic applicants. They ensure candidates meet the regulatory standards required for certification and play a key role in maintaining aviation safety standards. Becoming a DME requires extensive experience, a strong record of compliance, and successful completion of FAA training and evaluation.
