Role Summary

The Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of steel fabricated products and engineered solutions from concept through to manufacture. Working closely with customers, project managers, procurement, and production teams, the role involves producing accurate 2D & 3D models, engineering drawings, and manufacturing documentation while ensuring designs are safe, cost-effective, and practical to fabricate. The Design Engineer plays a key role in delivering high-quality projects on time by applying sound engineering principles, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and providing technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle. The role also contributes to product innovation, continuous improvement, and the successful delivery of projects that meet customer, quality, and business objectives.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed 3D models, fabrication drawings, and general arrangement drawings using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Tekla, AutoCAD).
  • Design steel structures, conveyor systems, platforms, walkways, chutes, hoppers, and bespoke fabricated equipment to customer specifications.
  • Prepare manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and production documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, health and safety regulations, and client requirements.
  • Perform engineering calculations to verify structural integrity, load capacities, and product performance.
  • Liaise with customers, project managers, procurement teams, and production personnel throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support workshop fabrication teams by resolving design queries and providing technical guidance.
  • Participate in design reviews, value engineering exercises, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors regarding technical specifications and purchased components.
  • Manage design changes and maintain accurate revision control of engineering documentation.
  • Assist with project planning, cost estimation, and material selection.
  • Support installation and commissioning activities when required.
  • Conduct site surveys and gather technical information for new projects and modifications.
  • Contribute to product development and innovation initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, ideally with design experience in the heavy equipment design.
  • Minimum of three years of work experience, preferably in Steel Fabrication and Engineering Services.
  • Competent user of 3D Solid Modeling CAD. CREO familiarity would be preferable, but not critical.
  • Experience with 2D Software such as Autocad
  • Experience in Mechanical, Hydraulic and Electrical systems would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of fabrication processes including welding, machining, cutting, and assembly.
  • Experience with an ERP system is a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A "Can do" attitude and ability to interact with a multi-functional team.
  • Ability to work with others to meet deadlines.
  • Able to assess workload and commit to realistic timelines.
  • Able to select from multiple design alternatives when a clear best choice is not evident.
  • Able to investigate root cause of machinery nonperformance.
  • Can identify risks both technical and commercial with proposed product change or new product
