Design Manager, Truss and Engineered Wood Products
Location: Balzac, AB

Our client is a newly established and well capitalized manufacturer in the lumber, truss, and engineered wood products space, building out operations in the Balzac area. With a strong leadership team and a clear growth plan, the organization is focused on becoming a key supplier to residential and multi family construction across Alberta.
They are seeking a Design Manager to lead the design function, build out a high performing team, and ensure accurate, efficient delivery of truss and floor system designs to support production and customer demand.
The Opportunity This is a key leadership role responsible for establishing design standards, managing workflow, and supporting the growth of the design department. The Design Manager will oversee all aspects of truss and floor system design, ensuring projects are completed accurately, on time, and aligned with production requirements.
This role will suit someone with strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and hands on experience using Simpson Strong-Tie software in a production driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership and Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of truss and EWP designers
  • Establish design standards, best practices, and workflows
  • Support recruitment and onboarding of design staff as the team grows
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high performance team environment
Design Oversight and Execution
  • Oversee the design of roof trusses, floor systems, beams, and related structural components
  • Ensure all designs meet applicable building codes, engineering requirements, and customer specifications
  • Review and approve designs prior to engineering seal and production
  • Support designers with complex or challenging projects
Software and Systems Management
  • Utilize Simpson Strong-Tie software for design and layout of structural components
  • Ensure proper use and optimization of design software across the team
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through systems, automation, and technology
  • Maintain accuracy and consistency in design outputs and documentation
Cross Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with sales, estimating, purchasing, and production teams to ensure alignment on timelines and project requirements
  • Support quoting and estimating with accurate and timely design input
  • Communicate clearly with internal teams and external stakeholders including engineers and customers
Workflow and Production Support
  • Manage design workflow to ensure deadlines are met and production is supported
  • Prioritize projects based on production schedules and customer needs
  • Monitor team output, turnaround times, and overall efficiency
  • Troubleshoot issues and ensure smooth handoff from design to production
Health and Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure designs align with safety standards, structural integrity, and regulatory requirements
  • Support a culture of safety within the design and production process
  • Collaborate with operations to ensure safe and efficient implementation of designs
Who They’re Looking For
  • 7 to 15 plus years of experience in truss and or engineered wood product design
  • Strong hands on experience with Simpson Strong-Tie design software
  • Proven leadership or mentorship experience within a design team
  • Deep understanding of residential and multi family construction and framing practices
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, structural requirements, and engineering principles
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast paced environment
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross functionally
  • Detail oriented with a focus on accuracy and quality
  • Experience in a production or manufacturing environment is preferred
