How much do design technologist jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for design technologist in the United States is $33.01, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $22.36 and $40.14 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paying career in design?

In design, roles such as Creative Director, UX Director, or Design Director tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures, especially in large companies or tech industries. These positions typically require extensive experience, leadership skills, and proficiency with design tools and strategic planning.

What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

By 2030, roles that involve repetitive manual tasks, such as data entry clerks and assembly line workers, are expected to decline due to automation and AI advancements. Design Technologists may see shifts toward more advanced, creative, and strategic roles as technology integrates further into design and development processes, but the core profession is likely to evolve rather than disappear.

What are Design Technologists?

Design Technologists are professionals who bridge the gap between design and technology by combining creative design skills with technical expertise. They work closely with designers and developers to prototype, test, and implement interactive digital products and experiences. Their role often involves coding, user experience (UX) design, and ensuring ideas are both visually appealing and technically feasible. Design Technologists play a crucial part in innovating and bringing creative concepts to life in digital environments.

What is the difference between Design Technologist vs UX Designer?

AspectDesign TechnologistUX Designer
Required SkillsDesign tools, front-end development, prototypingUser research, wireframing, user testing
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with developers and designers in product teamsFocuses on user experience and interface design
Industry UsageTech companies, startups, digital agenciesWeb and app development, digital agencies, corporate design teams

Design Technologists and UX Designers often work closely but focus on different aspects of product development. The Design Technologist bridges design and development, emphasizing technical implementation, while UX Designers concentrate on user experience and interface design. Both roles require collaboration and a mix of technical and creative skills, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Technologist, you need a strong blend of visual design abilities and front-end development skills, often supported by a degree in design, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help bridge the gap between designers and developers and ensure project goals are clearly understood. These skills are vital for creating user-centered digital experiences that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally robust.

What does a design technologist do?

A design technologist combines design and development skills to create and implement user interfaces, prototypes, and interactive experiences. They often work with design tools, coding languages, and collaborate closely with designers and developers to bridge the gap between design concepts and technical execution.

What jobs can design technology get you?

A Design Technologist can pursue roles such as UX/UI designer, front-end developer, product designer, or interaction designer. These positions often require skills in design tools, coding, and user experience principles, and are commonly found in tech companies, design agencies, and product teams.

How does a Design Technologist typically collaborate with UX designers and developers on project teams?

Design Technologists act as a bridge between design and engineering teams, translating creative concepts into interactive prototypes and functional components. They frequently participate in cross-disciplinary meetings, providing technical feedback to designers and ensuring that design ideas are feasible within the chosen technology stack. On a daily basis, they work closely with UX designers to iterate on user flows and interface elements, while also partnering with developers to ensure smooth handoffs and implementation. This collaborative approach helps accelerate the product development cycle and ensures consistency between the intended design and the final product.

Job description

We are looking for a Principal Design Technologist to drive the craft and scalability of our platform. In this role, you will inspire teams by creating ideal-state prototypes and provocations that utilize cutting-edge technical capabilities. By focusing on motion design, advanced prototyping, and the development of new tools, you will bridge the gap between design and engineering to deliver intuitive, expressive, and uniquely Intuit experiences.
Intuit has been design driven since its inception. Design for Delight (D4D) is foundational to how we identify opportunities and iterate toward breakthrough solutions. As a modern designer, you are both a craft leader and a hands-on designer who is deeply invested in fit, finish, interaction quality, and emotional resonance. You will partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Operations to translate forward-looking design experiences, including agentic AI experiences, into scalable and customer-facing experiences that feel natural, helpful, and human.
This role is more than delivery. It's about establishing the benchmark for platform design excellence at Intuit. Building systems, and experiences that consistently achieve it.
Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development of tools that allows designers to create prototypes using real production components and customer data.
  • Lead the development of principles, standards, scalable practices, frameworks, and libraries in prototypes and motion in service to design.
  • Inspire, advise, provoke, and lead the organization through provocations and proofs of concept that show what's possible in the medium of Ul code.
  • Creatively innovate within the Ul in both existing and target state tech stacks.
  • Enable pixel-perfect execution for design and engineering across platforms. Unblock and accelerate team members to deliver with unparalleled quality and speed.
  • Streamline design processes by leading style guide and token driven design/development.
  • Architect scalable code-based design systems that have design intention built in.
  • Partner with senior leaders and galvanize the org to act with game-changing prototyping, product features and concepts.
  • Champion outside-in, customer-centered thinking from early exploration through refinement of every touchpoint, balancing craft, scalability, and business outcomes.
  • Influence cross-functional leaders and partners in a matrixed environment, driving bold experiences that elevate quality and platform coherence.
  • Thoughtfully integrate agentic AI into product experiences, defining how intelligent systems show up in ways that feel natural, helpful, and human.
  • Elevate the craft and cohesion of our platform experiences so they feel intuitive, expressive, and distinctly Intuit.

Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in design technology, UX engineering, motion design, web development, or related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven track record in pushing the boundaries of user interface design through experimentation, developing new tools and processes, and partnering with design, engineering, data science, and research teams.
  • Organized, self-directed, efficient and able to manage multiple and complex projects in a timely manner.
