How much do design technologist jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 25, 2026, the average hourly pay for design technologist in the United States is $33.01, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $22.36 and $40.14 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paying career in design?

In design, roles such as Creative Director, UX Director, or Design Director tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures, especially in large companies or tech industries. These positions typically require extensive experience, leadership skills, and proficiency with design tools and strategic planning.

What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

By 2030, roles that involve repetitive manual tasks, such as data entry clerks and assembly line workers, are expected to decline due to automation and AI advancements. Design Technologists may see shifts toward more advanced, creative, and strategic roles as technology integrates further into design and development processes, but the core profession is likely to evolve rather than disappear.

What are Design Technologists?

Design Technologists are professionals who bridge the gap between design and technology by combining creative design skills with technical expertise. They work closely with designers and developers to prototype, test, and implement interactive digital products and experiences. Their role often involves coding, user experience (UX) design, and ensuring ideas are both visually appealing and technically feasible. Design Technologists play a crucial part in innovating and bringing creative concepts to life in digital environments.

What is the difference between Design Technologist vs UX Designer?

Design Technologists and UX Designers often work closely but focus on different aspects of product development. The Design Technologist bridges design and development, emphasizing technical implementation, while UX Designers concentrate on user experience and interface design. Both roles require collaboration and a mix of technical and creative skills, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Technologist, you need a strong blend of visual design abilities and front-end development skills, often supported by a degree in design, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help bridge the gap between designers and developers and ensure project goals are clearly understood. These skills are vital for creating user-centered digital experiences that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally robust.

What does a design technologist do?

A design technologist combines design and development skills to create and implement user interfaces, prototypes, and interactive experiences. They often work with design tools, coding languages, and collaborate closely with designers and developers to bridge the gap between design concepts and technical execution.

What jobs can design technology get you?

A Design Technologist can pursue roles such as UX/UI designer, front-end developer, product designer, or interaction designer. These positions often require skills in design tools, coding, and user experience principles, and are commonly found in tech companies, design agencies, and product teams.

How does a Design Technologist typically collaborate with UX designers and developers on project teams?

Design Technologists act as a bridge between design and engineering teams, translating creative concepts into interactive prototypes and functional components. They frequently participate in cross-disciplinary meetings, providing technical feedback to designers and ensuring that design ideas are feasible within the chosen technology stack. On a daily basis, they work closely with UX designers to iterate on user flows and interface elements, while also partnering with developers to ensure smooth handoffs and implementation. This collaborative approach helps accelerate the product development cycle and ensures consistency between the intended design and the final product.

Job description

About Stitch Fix, Inc.
Stitch Fix (NASDAQ: SFIX) Stitch Fix is redefining retail by combining human creativity with advanced data science and Generative AI. As we build the future of personalized shopping, we're equally committed to building yours. We believe in investing in our team as much as our technology. Join us to be a trendsetter in the industry and help us redefine what's possible for our clients, while we help you reach your full potential.
About the Role
The Product Design team is reimagining how exceptional digital experiences are designed and delivered at Stitch Fix. As a Design Technologist, you'll operate at the intersection of design and engineering, partnering closely with Product Designers and Engineers to transform ideas into interactive, high-fidelity experiences while improving the tools, systems, and workflows that enable great product design.
In this role, you'll prototype complex product experiences, build reusable technical capabilities, and introduce emerging technologies-including AI-powered tools-that help teams move faster with greater confidence. Your work will strengthen collaboration across Product Design and Engineering, improve implementation quality, and raise the technical craft of design across the organization.
Responsibilities
  • Build high-fidelity interactive prototypes that help teams explore product concepts, validate user experiences, and communicate design direction.
  • Develop reusable components, technical tooling, and shared capabilities that improve consistency, scalability, and efficiency across Product Design.
  • Partner closely with Product Designers and Engineers throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure design intent is translated into thoughtful, high-quality implementation.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies, AI capabilities, automation, and modern development practices that improve design workflows and expand what's possible for the team.
  • Champion technical excellence by documenting best practices, mentoring teammates, and driving adoption of new tools and workflows that elevate design quality and execution.
How AI and Tools Show Up in Your Day-to-Day Work
  • Use AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and other emerging technologies to accelerate prototyping, automate repetitive tasks, improve workflows, and enhance product quality.
  • Work with modern design, prototyping, and front-end development tools to build interactive experiences and shared technical capabilities.
  • Continuously evaluate, learn, and apply new technologies that improve how designers and engineers collaborate and deliver customer experiences.
About You
You're a collaborative builder who enjoys working across design and engineering to solve complex problems. You're equally comfortable creating polished prototypes, improving technical workflows, and exploring emerging technologies that help teams work more effectively.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in product design, front-end engineering, design systems, design technology, or a related discipline, with experience working across both design and engineering.
  • Experience building high-fidelity interactive prototypes using modern front-end technologies (such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, or similar frameworks).
  • Experience developing reusable components, design systems, or internal tooling that improves team efficiency and product consistency.
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Figma and prototyping technologies, along with modern software development workflows including version control and collaborative engineering practices.
  • Experience using AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or similar technologies to improve productivity, accelerate prototyping, and streamline technical workflows.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and cross-functional partnership skills, with the ability to translate between design and engineering perspectives.
Nice to Have
  • Experience building or contributing to enterprise design systems or shared component libraries.
  • Experience with animation, interaction design, motion, or advanced prototyping techniques.
  • Familiarity with workflow automation, AI-assisted development, or emerging product design technologies.
  • Experience mentoring designers or engineers and helping teams adopt new tools, processes, or technical best practices.
  • Experience working in e-commerce, retail technology, or other customer-facing digital product environments.
Why you'll love working at Stitch Fix...
  • We are a group of bright, kind people who are motivated by challenge. We value integrity, innovation and trust. You'll bring these characteristics to life in everything you do at Stitch Fix.
  • We cultivate a community of diverse perspectives- all voices are heard and valued.
  • We are an innovative company and leverage our strengths in fashion and tech to disrupt the future of retail.
  • We win as a team, commit to our work, and celebrate grit together because we value strong relationships.
  • We boldly create the future while keeping equity and sustainability at the center of all that we do.
  • We are the owners of our work and are energized by solving problems through a growth mindset lens. We think broadly and creatively through every situation to create meaningful impact.
  • We offer comprehensive compensation packages and inclusive health and wellness benefits.
