What are Design Technologists?

Design Technologists are professionals who bridge the gap between design and technology by combining creative design skills with technical expertise. They work closely with designers and developers to prototype, test, and implement interactive digital products and experiences. Their role often involves coding, user experience (UX) design, and ensuring ideas are both visually appealing and technically feasible. Design Technologists play a crucial part in innovating and bringing creative concepts to life in digital environments.

What is the difference between Design Technologist vs UX Designer?

Industry UsageTech companies, startups, digital agenciesWeb and app development, digital agencies, corporate design teams

Design Technologists and UX Designers often work closely but focus on different aspects of product development. The Design Technologist bridges design and development, emphasizing technical implementation, while UX Designers concentrate on user experience and interface design. Both roles require collaboration and a mix of technical and creative skills, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Technologist, you need a strong blend of visual design abilities and front-end development skills, often supported by a degree in design, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help bridge the gap between designers and developers and ensure project goals are clearly understood. These skills are vital for creating user-centered digital experiences that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally robust.

How does a Design Technologist typically collaborate with UX designers and developers on project teams?

Design Technologists act as a bridge between design and engineering teams, translating creative concepts into interactive prototypes and functional components. They frequently participate in cross-disciplinary meetings, providing technical feedback to designers and ensuring that design ideas are feasible within the chosen technology stack. On a daily basis, they work closely with UX designers to iterate on user flows and interface elements, while also partnering with developers to ensure smooth handoffs and implementation. This collaborative approach helps accelerate the product development cycle and ensures consistency between the intended design and the final product.

Shared Context Lab

New York, NY • On-site

Full-time

Posted 27 days ago

Job description

About Shared Context
For the first time in human history, machines can adapt - and we are within reach of transforming the relationship between people and computers. Of building software that adapts to each & every individual person. Of transforming the user into the maker.
At Shared Context Lab, we envision a rich and vibrant future powered by software that learns, that is malleable to you, and that orchestrates vast resources in the service of furthering your goals. We believe in Personal AI - a new way of interacting with computers, with each other, and with the world.
The future of AI will be centered around highly contextual and multi-player AI's. And we're building the backbone for how these AI's will learn about what will become their world: the messy world of humans, schedules, and social relationships. Our experiments and products push the boundaries of how we interact with AI.
We are funded by leading VCs and are a startup-in-residence at the iconic design and innovation firm, IDEO.
Design Technologist
We're looking for a Design Technologist to join us on this creative and industry-defining journey. You'll work directly with the founders to shape product direction through making, prototyping, and shipping.
You'd be a great fit if you are a hybrid designer-builder with strong product instinct, sharp taste, and a bias toward action. You're someone who can turn rough notions into fast, testable prototypes, build polished demos, and use code to explore new interactions and experiences. You should be excited by ambiguity and know how to learn quickly by making.
We care deeply about design, UX, and human-centered thinking. We're looking for someone who does too, and who wants to help raise the bar on craft, interaction, and feel.
What you'll do
  • Turn rough ideas into prototypes, demos, and lightweight product experiences
  • Explore and test new interactions through design and code
  • Work with the founders to shape product direction through making, not just specs
  • Bridge design and engineering so ideas are carried through with quality and speed
  • Create reusable patterns and cohesive design direction and systems

What we're looking for
  • Strong product taste and prototyping ability
  • Comfortable shipping concepts straight to production and also able to create pixel perfect designs
  • Keen and unrelenting eye for interaction, detail, and user experience
  • Clear communicator who can work fluidly across design and engineering
  • Curious, growth-oriented, and have strong opinions held loosely
  • Ideally, you've built things before, at a startup, on your own, or both

If you want to help shape a product from the beginning and use design and code to turn ideas into momentum, we'd love to hear from you.
Please note: This is an in-person role in SF or NY.
