What is a design lead?

A Design Lead is a senior professional responsible for guiding the creative direction and execution of design projects within an organization. They oversee design teams, collaborate with stakeholders, and ensure that visual and user experience standards are met. Design Leads often mentor junior designers, manage project timelines, and help align design strategies with business goals. Their role blends creative leadership with project management to deliver effective and innovative design solutions.

How does a design lead typically balance hands-on design work with team leadership responsibilities?

As a Design Lead, you'll often split your time between guiding and mentoring your team, setting the creative direction, and contributing directly to high-priority projects. While your leadership duties—such as conducting design reviews, coordinating with stakeholders, and ensuring alignment with business goals—will take up a significant portion of your schedule, most organizations still expect you to remain actively involved in the design process. This balance requires strong organizational skills and the ability to delegate effectively, ensuring both team growth and high-quality deliverables.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Lead, you need a solid background in design principles, user experience (UX), and visual communication, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and knowledge of project management systems is crucial. Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills help you guide teams and articulate design vision effectively. These skills ensure projects are delivered with high-quality design, aligned with business goals, and foster innovation within teams.

What is the difference between Design Lead vs UX Designer?

AspectDesign LeadUX Designer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Design, Graphic Design, or related fields; experience in leadership rolesBachelor's or Master's in Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, or related fields; portfolio showcasing UX projects
Work EnvironmentLeads design teams, collaborates with product managers and developers, oversees project directionFocuses on user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing within product teams
Industry UsageCommonly found in tech, advertising, and design agenciesPrimarily in tech companies, startups, and digital product firms

The main difference is that a Design Lead oversees the entire design process and team, providing strategic direction, while a UX Designer concentrates on creating user-centered experiences through research and design. Both roles require strong design skills, but the Design Lead has broader responsibilities and leadership duties.

Job description

Purpose of the Job

HH Global is looking for a high-calibre Design Lead to spearhead a new "always-on" creative production engine dedicated to a premier global technology client in the AI space. This role is embedded within a high-performance "Creative Production Hub," where you will lead the end-to-end execution of world-class digital assets across static and motion design.

The ideal candidate is a strategic operational leader who can "stitch things together" even when briefs aren't fully baked, balancing conceptual brilliance with technical precision. You will be a champion of innovation, integrating generative AI and automation tools into the creative workflow to maximize scalability across 20+ global markets.

Key Responsibilities

Creative Production & Technical Stewardship

  • Omnichannel Execution: Oversee the high-volume production of digital static and video assets, including social media content, display ads, and rich media.

  • Quality Assurance: Define and enforce strict technical quality standards and brand compliance for all content outputs.

  • Technical Specifications: Translate creative concepts into actionable technical specifications for designers, motion artists, and editors.

  • Hands-on Support: Execute, adapt, or update creative assets when necessary to meet urgent sprint deadlines.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Mentorship: Line manage, mentor, and motivate a team of visual and digital designers within a fast-paced, digital-first environment.

  • Collaborative Workflow: Partner with project managers and creative technologists to optimize team utilization and ensure deadlines are met efficiently without compromising quality.

  • Capacity Planning: Work with internal leads to prioritize project pipelines based on business impact and regional needs.

Global Scaling & Localization

  • Market Adaptation: Manage the simultaneous launch of assets across 20+ markets and languages, ensuring cultural relevance and linguistic accuracy.

  • Asset Governance: Oversee the "copy trix" process and technical adaptation of assets, managing thousands of versions with meticulous attention to detail.

  • DAM Management: Maintain the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system to ensure all localized versions are correctly tagged and accessible.

AI & Automation Integration

  • Efficiency Innovation: Implement the client’s 1P & 3P AI tools to accelerate the creative production cycle.

  • Process Automation: Collaborate with Creative Technologists to automate repetitive tasks like resizing and dynamic content generation.

Knowledge, Skills + Experience

  • Experience: Proven experience in progressive creative production leadership within a fast-paced agency or in-house studio serving global tech brands.

  • AI Aptitude: Demonstrated confidence in integrating emerging AI and generative tools into commercial production workflows.

  • Technical Proficiency: Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro) and Figma.

  • Agility: Proven ability to remain un-fazed in a rapid production sprint environment with continuous inputs.

  • Stakeholder Management: Exceptional communication skills; ability to present production strategies and timelines to senior global marketing stakeholders.

For New York applicants: The salary range for this position is $130,000 to $150,000 annually. Actual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors that are unique to each candidate, including skill set, experience, certifications and work location. This range may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.

The total compensation package for this position may also include annual performance bonus targets, benefits and/or other applicable incentives.
