What is a design lead?

A Design Lead is a senior professional responsible for guiding the creative direction and execution of design projects within an organization. They oversee design teams, collaborate with stakeholders, and ensure that visual and user experience standards are met. Design Leads often mentor junior designers, manage project timelines, and help align design strategies with business goals. Their role blends creative leadership with project management to deliver effective and innovative design solutions.

How does a design lead typically balance hands-on design work with team leadership responsibilities?

As a Design Lead, you'll often split your time between guiding and mentoring your team, setting the creative direction, and contributing directly to high-priority projects. While your leadership duties—such as conducting design reviews, coordinating with stakeholders, and ensuring alignment with business goals—will take up a significant portion of your schedule, most organizations still expect you to remain actively involved in the design process. This balance requires strong organizational skills and the ability to delegate effectively, ensuring both team growth and high-quality deliverables.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Lead, you need a solid background in design principles, user experience (UX), and visual communication, typically supported by a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and knowledge of project management systems is crucial. Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills help you guide teams and articulate design vision effectively. These skills ensure projects are delivered with high-quality design, aligned with business goals, and foster innovation within teams.

Job description

Description:

Worldwide Mission Critical is a global owner’s representation and project management company dedicated to the mission-critical industry, helping companies deliver their data centers on time and under budget. Founded on the principle that the right team of experienced data center professionals will deliver great projects, our ability to provide oversight for all aspects of a project sets us apart.

Summary

As a Design team Architectural Lead, you will oversee the design and delivery of complex building projects within the data center sector, leading multiple design disciplines such as Civil, Structural, Landscape, and Architecture (CSLA). You will ensure the integration of functional, operational, and sustainable solutions, managing the design process from initial concept through to project completion. This role requires strong collaboration with cross-functional teams, external partners, and consultants to ensure high-quality, on-time, and on-budget delivery of innovative data center solutions.

Requirements:
  • A licensed Architect with over 8 years of experience in the design, development, and operation of high-performance, mission-critical facilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction standards, building regulations, and safety protocols for large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong experience in master planning data center campuses.
  • Expertise in using design tools such as Revit/BIM, Bluebeam, Autodesk, or similar software to deliver high-quality design outcomes.
  • Strong background in structural design, particularly for various materials like steel, concrete, and mass timber, along with a deep understanding of architectural details and building systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to perform detailed analysis and troubleshooting across multiple design phases.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and lead cross-functional teams to successful project completion.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts, technical details, and project progress to diverse audiences, including stakeholders and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will guide projects through every stage—from conceptual planning and schematic design to the preparation of construction documents, administration, and final turnover—acting as the lead for CSLA disciplines.
  • You will collaborate with internal teams (including Development, Procurement, Construction, and Operations) and external stakeholders (such as AEoRs, contractors, and regulatory bodies) to resolve challenges, mitigate risks, and ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery with a focus on safety, functionality, and sustainability.
  • You will research and develop innovative architectural solutions and emerging design trends to enhance the scalability, sustainability, and operational efficiency of data center facilities.
  • You will oversee the issuance of RFPs, evaluate vendor proposals, manage contract execution, and ensure that all design-related documentation (such as change proposals, invoices, submittals, and reports) is in line with project requirements.
  • You will ensure that AEoR teams meet project milestones and quality standards, offering constructive feedback and fostering alignment across construction, operations, and other project stakeholders during performance evaluations.
  • You will actively work with project teams to identify and address potential risks, proactively adjusting project schedules as needed to meet evolving business demands.
  • You will participate in hands-on testing, mock-up reviews, and commissioning activities to ensure systems are installed and tested to the highest standards.
  • You will serve as a key point of contact between internal teams, consultants, and contractors, ensuring seamless communication and timely issue resolution across all stages of the project.
  • You will maintain a comprehensive understanding of project status, decision-making processes, and key milestones, ensuring accurate and up-to-date documentation is shared with stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • You will provide expert guidance on technical aspects of building systems design, ensuring all designs comply with industry standards and meet the client’s specifications for mission-critical environments.
  • You will evaluate existing facilities for feasibility of converting to a data center environment, understanding key drivers and non-negotiables.
  • You will facilitate collaboration among various technical disciplines to ensure integrated and cohesive system designs, ensuring alignment between the architectural team and other design teams.
  • You will lead the onboarding and training of new design team members, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across disciplines.
  • You will lead meetings focused on design, delivery, and quality to resolve critical issues and drive successful project outcomes.
  • You will collaborate with the Construction Quality team, leading site reviews, system integration checks, issue resolution, and commissioning script review to ensure optimal system performance.
  • You will assist the Facilities Engineering and Operations teams with technical guidance and knowledge transfer to ensure smooth system operation throughout the project lifecycle.
