Job description

Bridge Design Project Manager: Structural/Civil Engineer with technical expertise and communication skills necessary to lead bridge and culvert design projects following MDOT or MDOT Local Agency procedures. Typical projects include rehabilitation or replacement of bridges and culverts over waterways or intersecting roadways, generally for collector roads or major trunkline routes. Projects may also occasionally include pedestrian bridges or structures for golf course facilities, safety paths, shared-use recreational paths, and specialty bridge structures for private clients.
The Bridge Design Project Manager must have excellent communication skills and work well as a team member, including mentorship of other team members, coordinating with client representatives, and directing meetings.
A qualified candidate will be responsible for ensuring that their projects achieve a client's design objectives and that projects are completed on time and within the budget provided.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of structural engineers and technicians
  • Oversee project development and scheduling
  • Perform condition assessments for various types of structures to determine scope and estimated costs (Assist clients with programming)
  • Design and develop contract documents for bridge projects, including plans, technical specifications, reports, and structural cost estimates
  • Mentor fellow team members
  • Generate, explain and backcheck multiple rounds of detailed markups with CAD Technicians to bring drawings from start to finish
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and utility companies
  • Seal and sign project documents
  • Review and approve construction documents such as shop drawings, RFIs, and Change Orders
  • Interface with clients both during the project and upon completion to promote client loyalty and secure future work
  • Assist with the development of proposals and budgets

Experience:
Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
  • 8+ years of bridge-related design
  • Knowledge of AASHTO and MDOT Design Manuals, specifications, and procedures
  • Analysis, inspection, scoping, and delivery of contract documents (plans and specifications)
  • Experience and knowledge of design techniques, benefits, and limitations for various types of structures (Steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed systems)

Preferred
  • Load rating and capacity analysis
  • Understanding of construction methods and staging
  • Understanding of other civil engineering disciplines (transportation, hydraulics, geotechnical/soil mechanics, materials)
  • Strong leadership, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with various design methodologies such as ASD, LFD and LRFD
  • Experience with structural engineering programs such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads, RISA-3D, LEAP Bridge Enterprise, AASHTOWare, LEAP Consys, and Enercalc
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, MathCAD, and Bluebeam
