How much do dermatologist jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for dermatologist in the United States is $376,749.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $371,000.00 and $400,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are dermatologists?

Dermatologists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the skin, hair, and nails. They are trained to manage a wide range of issues, from common problems like acne and eczema to serious diseases such as skin cancer. Dermatologists also perform cosmetic procedures, such as removing moles, treating scars, and administering skin rejuvenation treatments. To become a dermatologist, one must complete medical school, a residency in dermatology, and obtain the appropriate licensure.

What are some careers in dermatology?

Careers in dermatology include roles such as dermatologists, dermatology researchers, dermatology nurses, and skin care specialists. These professionals diagnose and treat skin, hair, and nail conditions, often working in clinics, hospitals, or research settings, and require relevant medical training and certifications.

Is AI taking over dermatology?

As a dermatologist, AI is increasingly used as a tool to assist in diagnosing skin conditions through image analysis and data processing. However, it does not replace the need for clinical judgment, patient interaction, and treatment planning, which remain core responsibilities of dermatologists. AI enhances efficiency but requires dermatologists to interpret results and make final decisions.

What Do Dermatologists Do?

A dermatologist is a licensed doctor who specializes in the study of skin. They are experts in routine skin care as well as the prevention, diagnostics, and treatment of skin-related diseases and cancers. On a day-to-day basis, dermatologists meet with patients, listen to their complaints, examine skin irregularities, and take samples for testing. Minor procedures, such as wart or mole removal, may be performed on the spot, while longer, more invasive procedures are typically scheduled for a future appointment date. In addition to their skin expertise, dermatologists are also trained in the treatment of hair, nails, and mucous membranes (aka the lining inside of the mouth, nose, and eyelids). They diagnose and treat hair follicle irregularities, nail diseases, and mucous membrane infections by way of topical medications or more in-depth procedures. Dermatologists also assist patients with the appearance of their skin and nails by decreasing sun spots and scars, prescribing acne medication, and diminishing wrinkles and lines in the skin.

Is dermatology a high demand job?

Dermatology is considered a high-demand medical specialty due to increasing awareness of skin health and cosmetic procedures. Dermatologists are needed in both clinical and cosmetic settings, and the field offers good job stability and earning potential for those with specialized training and certification.

What is the difference between Dermatologist vs Pediatrician?

AspectDermatologistPediatrician
CredentialsMedical degree, dermatology residency, board certificationMedical degree, pediatrics residency, board certification
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, dermatology officesHospitals, clinics, pediatric offices
Industry UsageSpecializes in skin, hair, and nail conditionsFocuses on health and medical care for children

While both dermatologists and pediatricians are medical doctors with similar credentials, dermatologists specialize in skin-related issues, whereas pediatricians focus on overall health care for children. Their work environments often overlap, but their areas of expertise differ significantly.

What is the highest paying job in dermatology?

The highest paying roles in dermatology are often specialized positions such as dermatologic surgeons or cosmetic dermatologists, who perform advanced procedures like Mohs surgery or laser treatments. These roles typically require additional training, certifications, and experience, and can command higher salaries due to their technical complexity and demand.

What are some common challenges dermatologists face when managing a high patient volume in clinical practice?

Dermatologists often manage a high volume of patients daily, which can present challenges such as balancing thorough patient care with time constraints, ensuring accurate documentation, and keeping up with follow-up appointments. Prioritizing cases based on urgency and using efficient electronic health record (EHR) systems can help, but time management remains crucial. Additionally, dermatologists may encounter complex cases that require collaboration with other specialists, further emphasizing the importance of strong communication and organizational skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Dermatologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dermatologist, you need a medical degree, board certification in dermatology, and expertise in diagnosing and treating skin, hair, and nail conditions. Familiarity with dermatological tools, laser therapies, dermatoscopes, and electronic medical record (EMR) systems is essential. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills help dermatologists build trust with patients and collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals. These skills ensure accurate diagnoses, optimal treatment outcomes, and a high standard of patient care in a specialized medical field.
