Job Summary: The Deli Department Manager is responsible for providing excellent customer service to all guests. S/he is responsible for ensuring that the merchandise in the deli department is properly received, stocked, prepared, sliced, wrapped, weighed, priced, rotated, and merchandised. S/he must ensure the proper handling of products; which may include, but are not limited to: deli meats, cheeses, salads, sandwiches, dips, gourmet, and specialty items. S/he is expected to have a love and passion for deli items, with an extensive knowledge specific to the items Pete's carries. As a team member of Pete's Fresh Market it is important that Pete's Four Pillars of Value, Aesthetic, Quality, and Customer Service are always exemplified.
Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate a willingness to share knowledge and expertise with customers; advising and guiding them to make the proper selection.
  • Possess the knowledge and training of how to effectively use and maintain all deli equipment (ex. electric slicer).
  • Ensure all new employees receive proper training, coaching, and supervision.
  • Maintain the correct ordering, receiving, unloading, storage, and rotation of merchandise and building of displays.
  • Communicates clearly, concisely and accurately in order to ensure effective store operations. Filters communication to the shift team as directed by the store manager.
  • Contributes to positive team environment by recognizing alarms or changes in employee morale and performance and communicating them to the store manager.
  • Maintains and models a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events; continues to keep store operating to standard and sets a positive example for the shift team.
  • Develops positive relationships with shift team by understanding and addressing individual motivation, needs and concerns.
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Models a customer comes first attitude, delivers exceptional customer service, and supervises employees to ensure they are delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Reviews store environment and key business indicators to identify problems, concerns and opportunities for improvement in order to provide coaching and direction to the shift team to achieve operational goals.
  • Communicates ideas to the store manager for broader areas of improvement.
  • Supports store manager in implementing company programs by working directly with shift team to execute action plans that meet operational and organization objectives.
  • Supports store operations by recognizing and reinforcing individual and team accomplishments through existing organizational tools and makes recommendations to store manager on new, creative, and impactful methods of recognition.
  • Demonstrate full knowledge of sanitation requirements and regulations.
  • Perform all clean-up duties that are required in deli department in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Certifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalency w/ 5 years of experience in grocery store, deli, or similar retail environment.
  • Associate or Bachelor Degree in Business a plus
  • People management training classes or experience
  • Sanitation License

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have three to five years of relevant experience.
  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Must be capable of providing and modeling exceptional customer service.
  • Must have excellent communication skills in order to communicate effectively with customers, store leadership, and fellow-team members.
  • Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently or in groups.

Work Environment/ Physical Demands
  • Must have the physical ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time, bend and stoop to grasp objects, frequently push and pull up to 100 lbs., frequently lift loads up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift 75 lbs.
  • Duties are performed primarily in the Deli department. A Deli team member may be exposed to various temperature changes and work environments. Work includes walking, standing, lifting, and carrying products weighing up to 60 pounds, eye-hand coordination and interaction with customers and associates.
  • Occasional high stress when dealing with systems/customers/staff.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule with various shifts, including weekends and holidays, as determined by the store/business needs and as required to ensure adequate store staffing.
  • Must have reliable source of transportation.
  • The ability to be reached during/after work hours.

Starting hourly rates will be no less than the local minimum wage and will vary based on things like location, experience, and qualifications. All positions are eligible for Overtime, and some positions will have guaranteed Overtime available.
Hourly rate for Suburban Stores is $15-$20
Hourly rate for City of Chicago Stores is $17.05-$20
