What is the difference between DDC and PLC controls?

In DDC controls, building automation systems use dedicated controllers to manage HVAC, lighting, and other building functions through direct digital communication. PLC controls are industrial controllers primarily used for manufacturing and process automation, handling machinery and complex control tasks. Both require programming skills and understanding of control systems but serve different applications and environments.

What does DDC mean in controls?

In controls, DDC stands for Direct Digital Control, which refers to a computerized system used to monitor and manage building automation systems such as HVAC, lighting, and security. DDC controls enable precise, real-time adjustments and are often programmed using specialized software by technicians or control specialists.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ddc Controls position, and why are they important?

Excelling in DDC Controls requires strong knowledge of HVAC systems, building automation, and control logic, usually backed by technical training or an associate degree in a related field. Familiarity with programming interfaces, industry-standard protocols (like BACnet or Modbus), and certifications such as Niagara AX or Tridium are often expected. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and the ability to clearly communicate with clients and team members help professionals stand out. These competencies are crucial for designing, installing, and troubleshooting complex building automation systems, ensuring optimal building performance and client satisfaction.

What is the highest paying HVAC job?

The highest paying HVAC jobs typically include HVAC project managers, service managers, and specialized technicians such as refrigeration or controls specialists, often earning six-figure salaries. These roles usually require advanced certifications, extensive experience, and strong management or technical skills. Senior positions in large companies or those involving complex systems tend to offer the highest compensation.

What is a DDC Controls job?

A DDC Controls job involves working with Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems to manage and automate HVAC, lighting, and other building systems. Professionals in this role typically program, install, maintain, and troubleshoot control systems to ensure efficient operation. They may also integrate different building management systems (BMS) and optimize energy usage. Strong technical skills in programming, networking, and system diagnostics are essential. This job is common in commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings.

What does a typical workday look like for someone working in DDC Controls?

A typical day in a DDC Controls role involves programming and configuring digital controllers, performing system startups and commissioning, troubleshooting field devices, and collaborating with HVAC technicians and project managers. You may split your time between on-site work at commercial buildings and office-based tasks, such as system documentation and remote diagnostics. Interaction with clients and facilities staff is common, especially when addressing system issues or providing training. While the job can be fast-paced and occasionally requires after-hours support, it offers a dynamic environment with opportunities to learn about the latest building automation technologies.

Position Overview
As a Service Estimator I - Controls, you will prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates for building automation, DDC controls, HVAC controls, and related service, repair, retrofit, and maintenance projects. With guidance and mentorship from senior estimators, you will develop estimates, review project documentation, coordinate with internal teams and vendors, and support the creation of professional proposals. This role is suited for someone with foundational knowledge of controls systems who is ready to take ownership of estimate development and grow into a more senior estimating role within our controls service business.

  • Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes for controls components, programming, and integration work.
  • Assemble clear, professional proposals and supporting documentation while ensuring compliance with company standards and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with service technicians, project managers, sales teams, and customers to clarify scope and gather necessary details for accurate estimates.
  • Participate in job walks and site assessments to support scoping and pricing.
  • Maintain organized records of estimates, proposals, and historical data for reference and continuous improvement.

  • Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related technical field preferred (equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered).
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license and clean driving record required. Basic controls certifications (e.g., Niagara, Tridium, or manufacturer-specific) are a plus.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with occasional job site visits; ability to walk construction sites, climb ladders occasionally, and lift light materials (up to 25 lbs).
  • Work Environment/Safety: Professional office environment with periodic field exposure. Must maintain strong safety awareness on job sites. This is not a safety-sensitive position.

Required Skills
