Job description

Our Millwork Engineers play a critical role in transforming design intent into buildable, efficient, and high-quality custom millwork at Detroit Woodworking. This position bridges design, engineering, and production—ensuring that every project is thoughtfully detailed, technically sound, and optimized for fabrication and installation.

From concept through production, the Millwork Engineer is responsible for developing precise shop drawings, coordinating technical requirements, and supporting the shop floor to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and exceptional craftsmanship. This role is essential to maintaining Detroit Woodworking’s standards for quality, constructability, and continuous improvement.

· Develop detailed shop drawings, sections, and details for custom millwork, cabinetry, and architectural woodwork.

· Translate architectural and interior design drawings into accurate, buildable fabrication documents.

· Coordinate dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes, hardware, and installation requirements.

· Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and shop leadership to resolve design and constructability challenges.

· Support the shop floor with clarifications, revisions, and technical guidance throughout fabrication.

· Ensure drawings align with production capabilities, tooling, and Lean Manufacturing processes.

· Prepare and maintain bill of materials, cut lists, and fabrication documentation as required.

· Review field conditions, site dimensions, and installation constraints when applicable.

· Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to detailing standards, drawing efficiency, and production workflows.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Knowledge of shop processes, CNC fabrication, and installation sequencing preferred.
  • Demonstrates reliability, dependability, and accountability.
