Day Laborers information

What is a day laborer?

Day laborers are individuals who are hired to perform short-term, often manual labor jobs, typically on a daily basis. They usually work in industries such as construction, landscaping, moving, or agriculture and are paid at the end of each workday. Day laborers may seek work at designated locations, such as labor centers or street corners, and often do not have long-term contracts or employment benefits. The work can be physically demanding and job opportunities may vary day by day.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a day laborer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Day Laborer, you need physical stamina, basic understanding of manual tasks, and the ability to follow instructions, with no formal education usually required. Familiarity with hand tools, power equipment, and safety protocols is often necessary on various job sites. Reliability, punctuality, teamwork, and a strong work ethic set standout day laborers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safety, job efficiency, and consistent employment in physically demanding environments.

What is the difference between Day Laborers vs Construction Laborers?

AspectDay LaborersConstruction Laborers
CredentialsNo formal certifications typically requiredOften require OSHA safety training or certifications
Work EnvironmentTemporary, outdoor, varied locationsConstruction sites, often indoors and outdoors
Employer UsageHired through day labor agencies or on a daily basisEmployed directly by construction companies or contractors
Search/Comparison IntentCommonly compared for short-term, flexible workCompared for ongoing construction projects

Day Laborers are typically hired for short-term, flexible outdoor work without formal certifications, often through agencies. Construction Laborers usually work on specific projects, may require safety certifications, and are employed directly by construction firms. While both roles involve manual labor in construction environments, Day Laborers focus on temporary, day-to-day tasks, whereas Construction Laborers are part of longer-term projects.

What are some common challenges faced by day laborers on job sites, and how can they be managed?

Day laborers often face challenges such as physically demanding tasks, variable work hours, and adapting to new environments or teams on short notice. Effective communication with supervisors and co-workers is essential to understand expectations and ensure safety. It's also important to stay organized, arrive prepared with necessary gear, and be proactive in asking questions or voicing concerns to help manage workload and minimize risks. Building a reputation for reliability and hard work can lead to more consistent opportunities.

Job description

Voz is looking for new members to join our Board of Directors and help shape the next chapter of our organization.

For more than 25 years, Voz has worked alongside day laborers and domestic workers to build worker power, defend workers’ rights, and create a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

As we continue growing, we’re looking for people who believe in immigrant justice, worker leadership, and community-led solutions. We want board members who are excited to roll up their sleeves, think strategically, ask thoughtful questions, and help strengthen the organization for the future.

There isn’t one “right” background for this role. Whether your experience is in finance, fundraising, law, communications, human resources, nonprofit leadership, or another field, or you’re simply someone who deeply believes in our mission, we encourage you to apply.

Be Part of the Next Chapter

Board members play an important role in helping Voz stay strong, accountable, and grounded in our mission. They work alongside staff, worker leaders, and fellow board members to:

  • Help guide the organization’s vision and strategic direction.
  • Strengthen Voz’s long-term financial sustainability.
  • Build relationships with community partners, supporters, and funders.
  • Ensure our decisions remain rooted in the leadership, experiences, and needs of immigrant workers.

We especially encourage people with lived experience in the communities Voz serves to apply. We believe those closest to the challenges should help lead the solutions, and we’re committed to building a board that reflects the communities we work alongside every day.

Bonus points if you’re a lawyer, accountant, graphic designer, fundraiser, or a dope artist.

What Board Service Looks Like

Board members serve a two-year term and are expected to:

  • Attend monthly board meetings, which are mostly virtual with some in-person gatherings
  • Participate actively in at least one board committee
  • Support Voz’s fundraising efforts
  • Make an annual contribution that is personally meaningfulShare Voz’s work within their personal, professional, and community networks
  • Come ready to listen, learn, contribute, and work as part of a team
