Job description

The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is currently seeking a Geologist within our Superior or Longmont, CO offices. The Geologist will assist with implementing environmental projects, that could include groundwater modeling and field activities.
The ideal candidate will have 1 to 4 years of environmental consulting experience and strong computational and computer skills. Proficiency with databases, preferably Microsoft Access, ArcGIS, and groundwater modeling tools, including finite-difference and/or finite-element modeling approaches, is preferred. Attention to detail, strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to quickly learn new technical skills are required. The successful candidate should have a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and the ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.

Essential Job Functions:

  •  Assist with writing proposals, obtain bids from vendors and subcontractors, draft cost estimates and project budgets.

  • Conducting field sampling programs and field procedures.

  • Perform soil, groundwater, soil vapor, and other environmental investigations, support groundwater monitoring, hydrogeologic evaluations, and groundwater modeling efforts.

  • Evaluating site characterization data; assisting with water feasibility studies, remedial alternatives evaluations, remediation design, and implementation.

  • Interface with subcontractors and internal technical resources.

  • Develop sampling plans, health and safety plans, supervise and oversee field investigations.

  • Prepare technical reports, memos, response to comments tables.

  • Prepare and review figures, conceptual site models, data visualizations, and technical design schematics for remediation and environmental investigation projects.

  • Review and evaluate environmental, hydrogeologic and geotechnical data. Perform statistical analyses.

  • Support feasibility studies, remedial alternatives evaluations, remediation design, and implementation oversight.

  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, geologists, scientists, risk assessors, data managers, and other technical specialists.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Geology or Hydrogeology required.

  • One to 4 years of professional environmental consulting experience is required.

  • Previous field experience required, including supervision of soil and groundwater investigations, sampling activities, and subcontractor oversight is required.

  • Must be a skilled technical writer.

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Training required or can be acquired first month of employment.

  • Ability to travel and perform field work/oversight (up to approx. 20% of travel required).

  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science (MS) degree preferred.

  • Experience with both sedimentary and hard rock drilling and well installation desired.

  • Previous experience developing and calibrating groundwater models is desired.

  • MSHA training preferred.

  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro or Auto CAD use desired.

  • Experience with SQL or Access database use desired.

  • Familiarity with geochemistry and statistical evaluations of water chemistry and trend analysis is desired.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing 25 -50lbs in variable weather and terrain.

  • Ability to travel and perform field work/oversight as required (approx. 20% required).
  • Ability to walk across variable terrain, including uneven ground, in all weather conditions (extreme hot/cold temperatures, loud noises, bugs, etc.).
  • Have full range of motion to support field activities (ability to stand, bend, kneel, and reach during field activities).

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Based out of the Superior or Longmont, CO offices with potential of a hybrid work arrangement, but the candidate must reside within 25 miles of the local offices. This arrangement is subject to review and may change at the company's discretion.

  • Field work will include work to be performed outside, as a result will include working in various environmental factors (weather, altitude, terrain, noise, bugs, drilling sites, industrial facilities, etc.). This can include operating field instruments and tools, remaining stationary for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting, and sitting for site assessments, sampling, oversight, and other field activities.

  • Office work will include extended periods sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment.

Additional Information:

  • Full-time, Monday through Friday work schedule (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client needs.

  • Work will be performed in a field and office setting.

Target salary range:  $60,000 to $70,000.
