Interns work with public datasets, statistics, and digital tools to uncover insights and create compelling narratives. Typical tasks include data scraping, fact-checking, and assisting in the production of data-driven articles. This internship helps build technical skills in data analysis software like Excel, Python, or SQL, as well as data visualization tools. It provides hands-on experience in investigative journalism and digital storytelling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Data Journalism Internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Journalism Intern, you need a solid grounding in journalism principles, data analysis, and research, typically supported by coursework in journalism, statistics, or a related field. Familiarity with data visualization tools (such as Tableau or Flourish), spreadsheet software, and basic programming languages like Python or R is commonly expected. Strong curiosity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with editorial teams and translate complex data into compelling stories. These abilities are vital for uncovering meaningful insights, producing accurate reports, and engaging diverse audiences with data-driven journalism.

What types of projects or stories will Data Journalism Interns typically work on during the internship?

As a Data Journalism Intern, you'll often help identify, clean, and analyze large datasets to uncover trends and insights that inform news stories. You may be tasked with contributing to investigative reports, creating data visualizations, or assisting in fact-checking and verifying data-driven claims. Interns frequently collaborate with reporters, editors, and graphic designers to develop compelling, reader-friendly content. This hands-on experience provides a valuable introduction to the fast-paced world of digital journalism and prepares you for future roles in the field.
