Job Title: Data Engineer II

FLSA Status: Exempt

Department: IT - Business Intelligence

Location: Corporate Office (Fort Wayne, IN)

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for designing, building, and supporting enterprise data pipelines and platforms that facilitate analytics, regulatory reporting, and business intelligence throughout Brotherhood Mutual. Requires demonstrating expertise across all phases of development, from acquiring data from source systems to timely loading of enterprise data stores for analytic, regulatory, and reporting purposes.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, and maintain ETL/ELT processes for both on-premises and cloud-based data platforms, ensuring alignment with established architectural and development standards.
  • Ingest data from on-premises and cloud source systems into centralized analytical platforms, such as data warehouses, lakehouses, and curated enterprise data models.
  • Build and maintain database objects including tables, views, stored procedures, and semantic models to support reporting, analytics, regulatory, and operational data needs.
  • Manage and optimize data solutions utilizing relational, dimensional, and file-based storage, including cloud-hosted data warehouses and data lake environments.
  • Implement data quality checks, reconciliation processes, and monitoring to ensure enterprise datasets are accurate, complete, and reliable.
  • Analyze data to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and quality issues, contributing to the continuous improvement of data pipelines and models.
  • Identify and fix problems related to databases, data pipelines, and query performance.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, analysts, and IT partners to gather requirements and translate them into scalable data solutions.
  • Provide delivery planning support, including effort estimation and assistance with establishing delivery timelines.
  • Develop and deploy data solutions using standardized development, testing, deployment, and rollback procedures.
  • Support operational readiness by participating in system upgrades, platform changes, and disaster recovery testing for data platforms.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving data engineering tools and cloud technologies through training and professional development opportunities.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong proficiency in SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Working knowledge of cloud-based data services, including Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Fabric data platform components.
  • Proficiency in Python as the primary programming language for data engineering, including experience with Microsoft Fabric notebooks and Spark/PySpark-based data processing frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of data engineering principles, including data modeling, pipeline orchestration, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with dimensional, analytical, statistical, and relational data models.
  • Ability to design, support, and troubleshoot enterprise-scale data pipelines and data platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to data quality and detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
  • Proven ability to learn and apply modern technologies, tools, and methodologies.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service mindset when working with internal stakeholders and partners.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
List Degree Requirement, Years' Experience, and Certifications

  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience is required
  • Three (3) or more years of experience working with database technologies and data integration platforms (e.g., SQL Server, Informatica, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Fabric, AWS or similar) is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in or exposure to the insurance industry is preferred.
