What are Data Controllers?

Data Controllers are individuals or organizations responsible for determining how and why personal data is processed. They play a key role in ensuring that data handling complies with relevant data protection laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Data Controllers must establish data processing policies, uphold data subject rights, and ensure that third-party processors also comply with regulations. Their responsibilities include collecting, storing, and managing personal data in a secure and lawful manner.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Controller, you need a strong understanding of data protection regulations, data management practices, and compliance, typically supported by relevant education in law, information management, or a similar field. Familiarity with GDPR, data management platforms, and privacy compliance tools is essential, and certifications such as CIPP/E or CIPM are highly valued. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and excellent communication are important soft skills for managing sensitive data and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure data is handled lawfully and securely, minimizing risk and maintaining organizational trust.

What are some common challenges faced by Data Controllers when managing data privacy compliance across multiple departments?

Data Controllers often encounter challenges ensuring that all departments consistently adhere to data privacy regulations, as each team may have different processes for collecting and handling personal data. Coordinating regular training, maintaining up-to-date records of processing activities, and facilitating timely responses to data subject requests can be complex in larger organizations. Successful Data Controllers usually develop clear communication channels and work closely with IT, HR, and legal teams to establish unified data governance practices and mitigate compliance risks.

What is the difference between Data Controller vs Data Analyst?

AspectData ControllerData Analyst
Primary RoleManages data privacy, compliance, and data governance policiesAnalyzes data to extract insights and support decision-making
Required SkillsKnowledge of data protection laws, data management, and privacy regulationsStatistical analysis, data visualization, and reporting skills
Work EnvironmentTypically in organizations handling sensitive data, legal or compliance teamsOften in business, marketing, or finance departments
CertificationsGDPR, CIPP, or data protection certificationsExcel, SQL, data analysis certifications

While both roles work with data, Data Controllers focus on data privacy, governance, and compliance, ensuring data handling aligns with legal standards. Data Analysts, on the other hand, interpret data to generate insights for business decisions. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals to each role.

Job description

Ourisman, Trusted Tradition

Here's to those who think differently. The ones who think that a car dealership's first priority should be the guest. Such a candid idea could only come from Ourisman. Because we're forward thinking, just like the communities we serve. Individuals who won't be constrained by how things "have always been done", but instead strive to do things "how they could be done" and "how they should be done." It is a philosophy we have infused into every fabric of our dealerships, from the bottom up, in every department, and in every Ourisman team member. Changing the way we all think about car buying is just the beginning.

Role Summary

Ourisman Automotive Group is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to oversee the financial operations of our dealership. The Controller will be responsible for managing financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information.

  • Develop and manage the annual budget, perform financial forecasting, and provide analysis and recommendations to support strategic planning.
  • Oversee all aspects of accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting principles, dealership policies, and regulatory requirements, including tax filings and audits.
  • Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvements.
  • Implement and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting.
  • Supervise and mentor the accounting and team, providing guidance and support to enhance their performance and development.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of financial operations.
  • Work closely with other departments, including sales, service, and management, to support business operations and financial decision-making.
  • This role is shared between two Ourisman automotive stores, and the selected candidate will be responsible for supporting operations at both locations.

What we look for

  • Proven experience as a Controller or in a similar financial management role, required in the automotive industry.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and budgeting processes.

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities, with experience in supervising and developing staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with a commitment to maintaining financial integrity.

Benefits
