Why Choose Us: The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) to join our talented team of professionals in the North Central Region Office to manage the Bathymetry Data Collection Section (BDCS). You will be responsible for supervising staff, leading and supporting bathymetric and hydrographic data collection efforts in coordination with the Hydrographic and Technical Studies Section (HTSS) manager and staff. The BDCS and HTSS, in collaboration with designated land surveyors in-responsible-charge, are responsible for project planning, data collection, post-processing, data analysis, and archiving of bathymetric data throughout the North-Central Region, primarily within the Sacramento - San Joaquin River Delta area. This data is used to monitor riverbed changes over time and for other related hydrologic studies. Our staff are equipped with the most modern and advanced equipment and software to collect, process, and analyze bathymetric and hydrographic data to support the State Water Project and inform water management decisions. Duties: Under the general direction of the Supervising Engineer, Water Resources (Resources Assessment Branch Manager), the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) serves as the Manager of the Bathymetry Data Collection Section for the North Central Region Office and is responsible for managing and coordinating the activities of a multi-disciplinary team.

The fieldwork described above will require driving and walking on public and private roadways and on uneven terrain and the ability to bend, stoop, twist, traverse, and lift load's up to approximately 40 pounds.

This position requires the incumbent to develop and supervise Section staff (working both in the office processing data and preparing deliverables and in the field onboard vessels collecting bathymetric and hydrographic data); work cooperatively with others; exercise sound professional judgment; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; possess excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills; establish and maintain cooperative relations with other internal DWR divisions and local agencies; represent the Department and Section at meetings; give accurate and complete presentations and briefings; and maintain regular, consistent, and predictable attendance.
In addition, it is desirable that the incumbent has experience with project management, boating, bathymetry or field surveying and surveying equipment, hydrographic mapping, spatial data programs, and data processing software. Knowledge of the State Water Project and familiarity with the Sacramento - San Joaquin River Delta is also a plus.
