Job description

Definition Under general direction, is responsible for supervising crews engaged in the construction, investigation, maintenance, power cleaning, or repair of wastewater/stormwater collection systems; performs related duties as required. Examples of Work (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed) Supervises employees engaged in the installation, repair, and maintenance of storm and sanitary sewer lines, or in the investigation of complaints such as water backed up in basements, flooded conditions in streets, alleys, and yards, broken or missing manhole covers, broken catch basin gates, odors in buildings, pollution in streams, or items lost in sewers; Coordinates the activities and work schedules of crews engaged in constructing, investigating, repairing, or cleaning of sewer lines; Responds to crews seeking advice in controversial or difficult field investigations; Inspects the progress of projects and investigations to assure that assignments are completed properly and in a timely manner; Meets with management to discuss job priorities and preventive maintenance programs; Instructs collection system maintenance personnel on work methods and safety procedures; Verifies daily reports and job-related data entered into the computerized maintenance management system; Prepares and maintains reports for repairs completed, materials used during a project, and history data on investigations for processing of damage claims; Assists other City agencies to locate sewers to prevent damage when working in the area; Initiates, opens, and closes work orders and service requests in the computerized maintenance management system, and approves associated timesheets and related charges; Assigns and controls the dispatch of wastewater/stormwater collection system investigations initiated by citizens or the department; Assists in the development of work processes and standard operating procedures; Participates in the employment interview process of potential candidates; Signs off on performance reviews, approves leave requests, and recommends disciplinary actions; May give testimony in court. Minimum Qualifications Completion of the twelfth school grade and two (2) years of experience supervising employees engaged in the investigation, construction, maintenance and repair of wastewater/stormwater collection systems, underground utilities, or general construction work.

Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of a diploma. Possession of a valid driver's license. Test/Job Contact Information The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification.

If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center at 614-645-7439. The examination process will consist of a Situational Judgement Test (SJT) weighted 20%; and a computer administered exam weighted 80% covering reading comprehension, problem sensitivity, logic and reasoning, safety, reading maps, atlases and record plans, Microsoft 2016 and 2019 Outlook, Excel and Word.

The exam is expected to be administered in September 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time. All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score.

The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
