At Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center (AVRMC), we understand that accurate health information is essential to quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and financial sustainability. We are seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and dependable Inpatient Specialist to join our Health Information Management team in La Junta.

Position Summary

As an Inpatient Specialist, you will be responsible for abstracting, coding, and maintaining patient health information for inpatient, outpatient, and Emergency Department visits. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of patient records, supporting continuity of care, regulatory requirements, reporting, and reimbursement processes.

This is a Full-Time position within our Medical Records Department.

Key ResponsibilitiesMedical Record Abstracting amp; Coding
  • Abstract information from inpatient, outpatient, and Emergency Department medical records into the computerized health information database
  • Assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems
  • Ensure accurate sequencing of diagnosis and procedure codes to support proper reimbursement
  • Code medical records accurately and within established timeframes
  • Review records for completeness, consistency, and accuracy
Data Integrity amp; Compliance
  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of patient information within electronic medical records
  • Ensure compliance with applicable coding standards, regulations, and facility policies
  • Protect confidential patient information and maintain HIPAA compliance at all times
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior and respect for security and privacy requirements
  • Assist with audits and quality reviews of patient information and coding data
Reporting amp; Statistical Management
  • Maintain statistical information and reports for hospital departments
  • Support organizational planning and decision-making through accurate health information data
  • Monitor and verify information entered into hospital databases
  • Assist with data collection and reporting requirements as assigned
Organization amp; Productivity
  • Complete assigned duties according to established guidelines, protocols, and timelines
  • Prioritize workload effectively and manage multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism in a fast-paced healthcare environment
  • Follow through on assignments and communicate with supervisors regarding barriers or delays
  • Seek additional responsibilities when regular assignments are completed
QualificationsRequired
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality
  • Ability to multitask, organize work, and solve problems effectively
  • One (1) year of coding experience
Preferred
  • Experience in medical records management
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • ICD-10 coding experience
  • CPT-4 coding experience
