Position Overview

Kiewit is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer with deep, proven experience in mission critical data center electrical commissioning. This role is accountable for the commissioning, validation, energization readiness, and long-term reliability of complex electrical systems supporting data center operations.

The Senior Electrical Engineer serves as the technical authority for electrical system performance, leading redundancy verification, integrated systems testing, and failure-mode validation to ensure systems perform safely and reliably under both normal and fault conditions. The role requires a strong balance of hands-on site leadership and office-based engineering rigor, with direct responsibility for commissioning deliverables, field execution, and issue resolution.

This position plays a critical leadership role within Kiewit's Mission Critical organization and directly supports execution, commissioning, and turnover of large-scale, high-reliability facilities.

Our rapidly growing Industrial Design Group, which includes process, electrical, controls, structural, architectural, geotechnical, and civil disciplines, is a multi-faceted and leading-edge division of Kiewit with best-in-class technical expertise focused on EPC and design-build delivery of industrial projects in markets such as Food & Beverage, Consumer Products, Heavy Manufacturing, Industrial Buildings Industrial Water and Utilities. 

Location

These roles will be full-time either on-site at a construction project are starting out in our Lenexa, Kansas office. Must be willing to travel and go to where the work is. 

Responsibilities
  • Own and lead the electrical commissioning scope for mission critical data center projects from pre-functional testing through Integrated Systems Testing (IST) and turnover.
  • Serve as the technical authority for electrical system validation, ensuring compliance with design intent, operational requirements, and mission critical performance standards.
  • Lead and coordinate all electrical testing phases, including:
    • Factory witness testing (FWT)
    • Site acceptance testing (SAT)
    • Equipment start-up
    • Functional performance testing (FPT)
    • Integrated systems testing (IST)
  • Lead electrical energization planning and execution, including sequencing, risk assessments, live system coordination, and contingency planning.
  • Perform and independently validate electrical system redundancy verification across N, N+1, and 2N architectures, including live testing, simulated fault conditions, and load manipulation to confirm resiliency and fault tolerance.
  • Develop, review, and approve office-based engineering deliverables, including:
    • Commissioning plans and scripts
    • Electrical system validation documentation
    • Redundancy and failure-mode analysis
    • Test reports and final commissioning records
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex electrical issues encountered during commissioning, testing, and turnover to ensure systems are safe, reliable, and operationally ready.
  • Validate performance of major electrical systems, including utility service, medium- and low-voltage distribution, generators, UPS systems, switchgear, protective relaying, and downstream distribution.
  • Coordinate closely with design engineers, construction teams, commissioning partners, vendors, utilities, AHJs, and client stakeholders to drive alignment and timely resolution of technical challenges.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and commissioning team members.
  • Support turnover activities and ensure accurate, complete documentation is delivered for operations, maintenance, and long-term facility reliability.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience, with significant hands-on experience working at sites.
  • Proven experience leading electrical commissioning for data center or mission critical facilities, including integrated systems testing and redundancy validation.
  • Strong, hands-on experience with:
    • Electrical system redundancy verification
    • Live power systems and energization activities
    • Failure-mode and fault-condition testing
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex commissioning activities spanning field execution and office-based engineering deliverables.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to lead technical discussions with internal teams, commissioning agents, vendors, and clients.

Preferred

  • Experience on large-scale hyperscale or enterprise data center projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
  • Strong familiarity with industry standards and best practices related to mission critical electrical systems and commissioning.
  • Prior experience working within a contractor-led commissioning or execution-focused environment. #LI-KS23
