SMS is seeking an experienced, skilled, and detail-oriented Cable Plant Designer to join our team supporting the United States Department of Defense. The successful candidate will join a team responsible for supporting the DoDs network in the National Capital Region.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining, coordinating, design, and installation oversight of DoD DISA J6 Pentagon (formerly known as Joint Service Provider (JSP) and Information Technology Agency (ITA)) inside plant cable infrastructure to include conduit, cable trays, copper, coax, fiber and all associated cabling elements in the Pentagon, Mark Center, and other locations within the National Capital Region supported by DISA J6P.
  • Responsible for maintaining, coordinating, design, and installation oversight of DISA J6P offered services for outside plant and the OSP related facilities in the NCR under Government oversight.
  • Must follow DOD/DISA J6P and commercial best practice procedures, standards and/or codes. Provide Engineering Installation Plans (EIPs) required for installation of communication spaces, pathways, cable racks, cable installation, and cable termination.
  • Operation and Maintenance support to include equipment refreshes and ongoing maintenance and clean-up of more than 1800 Telecommunication Rooms at the Pentagon, Mark Center and other buildings under DISA J6P Operations purview.
  • Provide documentation such as Cable Installation Plans (CIP), cut sheets, cost estimates, site surveys, and weekly reports.
  • Develop maintenance plans for corrections and ensure the DOD, DISA J6P, and industry standards are upheld.
  • This position is primarily an on site in Crystal City, Virginia with a flexible Monday-Friday schedule covering required core contract hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Active DOD Secret clearance, with ability to upgrade to TS/SCI
  • Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification
  • Minimum 6 years developing layout and design for technology systems including voice, data, and structured cabling.
  • Bachelors Degree preferred
  • Proficiency with MS Office, MS Project, SharePoint, and MS Visio
  • Must be well versed in BICSI guidelines and standards.
  • Knowledge of NEC, IEEE, EIA, TIA, and other industry standards and codes related to the design and installation of low voltage and telecommunications systems, and their spaces and pathways.
  • Strong knowledge of Structured Cabling Systems including survey, design, installation, and testing/commissioning.
