What are Data BI Engineers?

Data BI (Business Intelligence) Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain systems that transform raw data into meaningful business insights. They develop data pipelines, integrate various data sources, and create reports or dashboards to support decision-making processes. Their work ensures that companies have accurate, timely, and actionable information to drive strategy and operations. Data BI Engineers typically work closely with data analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders.

What is the difference between Data Bi Engineer vs Data Analyst?

While both roles work with data, Data Bi Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, whereas Data Analysts interpret data to provide actionable insights. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals for their data needs.

How does a Data BI Engineer typically collaborate with business stakeholders and data analysts?

A Data BI Engineer frequently works with business stakeholders and data analysts to understand data requirements, translate business needs into technical specifications, and ensure data solutions align with organizational goals. This role often involves participating in meetings to gather requirements, sharing progress updates, and iterating on dashboards or data pipelines based on feedback. Effective communication is key, as Data BI Engineers must bridge the gap between technical data structures and actionable business insights. Regular collaboration helps ensure that the data solutions provided are both technically sound and valuable for decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data BI Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data BI Engineer, you need strong skills in data modeling, SQL, ETL processes, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker, as well as experience with data warehouses and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating data insights into actionable business recommendations. These skills and qualities are essential for building reliable data solutions that empower organizations to make informed, data-driven decisions.

Principal Product Marketing Manager, Data & BI

Actian Corporation

OR

Full-time

Job description

About Actian
Actian helps businesses put their data and AI strategy to work. Our portfolio spans high-performance databases, data management, and business intelligence (BI).

We're expanding into AI-native capabilities across all of it, and we're early enough that the decisions you make here will shape how the market sees us.

About the Role
We're looking for a senior PMM who knows the data and BI space well enough to have opinions about it. You'll own go-to-market across 2 distinct motions.

Our BI platform is your primary focus: net new acquisition in a competitive market, with a strong open-source community, and a growing AI story to tell.

The database motion is renewal and retention, working closely with Customer Marketing and PM to keep a loyal, installed base engaged and expanding.

If you've marketed a BI or analytics product, understand how AI is reshaping what buyers expect from data platforms, and want to work on something where AI is rewriting the category; this role is for you.
Responsibilities:

Business Intelligence (Net New Acquisition)

  • Develop and maintain positioning, differentiated messaging, and a cohesive narrative that connects our unique value to customer needs

  • Lead go-to-market for product launches from bill of materials through sales enablement

  • Create demand generation content targeting technical and business buyers: developers embedding reporting, data team leads, and analytics buyers evaluating platforms

  • Build and deliver internal enablement materials and training: product tours, email cadences, pitch materials, customer stories, and demo scripts

  • Create sales plays and campaigns that drive adoption and pipeline impact

  • Partner with R&D to shape roadmap and articulate our AI story, including agentic workflows, AI-driven data enrichment, natural language dashboard creation, and automated insights

  • Monitor competitive landscape and provide strategic recommendations for product positioning and PM roadmap input

Actian Databases (Retention & Renewal)

  • Partner with Customer Marketing and PM on the retention content calendar: webinars, user days, roadmap workshops, and expansion plays

  • Bring new features to market and build enablement materials that sharpen renewal conversations around AI capabilities

  • Translate roadmap updates into customer-facing messaging that reinforces value at renewal time

Cross-Portfolio

  • Contribute to Actian's broader AI narrative as we build out agentic, MCP-connected, and LLM-ready capabilities across product lines

  • Create messaging and content for cross-sell expansion programs within the Actian portfolio

Requirements:
  • 6-10 years of PMM experience in enterprise software, with meaningful time in data, analytics, BI, or adjacent categories

  • Experience marketing a BI or analytics product directly

  • Background marketing to analytics teams, data engineers, and application developers

  • Familiarity with how AI capabilities are reshaping BI product roadmaps and buyer expectations

  • Experience with open-source communities, free trials and product-led growth models

  • Hands-on experience with AI tools and workflow automation (we pay attention to this)

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
