What are some challenges a data analyst might face when working in a startup environment?

Data Analysts in startups often encounter rapidly shifting priorities and limited resources, which require them to adapt quickly and independently manage their work. You may find yourself setting up new data processes from scratch, dealing with incomplete datasets, or balancing multiple projects at once. Collaboration is frequent, as you'll typically work closely with founders, product managers, engineers, and marketers to deliver actionable insights. This environment fosters valuable learning opportunities and skill development, but it also demands flexibility, resourcefulness, and a willingness to take on diverse tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the data analyst startup position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst at a startup, you need strong quantitative skills, proficiency in data manipulation and statistical analysis, and often a degree in a related field like mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Familiarity with tools like SQL, Python, R, Excel, and data visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI is highly beneficial, as is experience with cloud-based data storage. Adaptability, problem-solving, and excellent communication skills set standout candidates apart in this fast-paced environment. These capabilities are crucial because startup Data Analysts often wear multiple hats, working cross-functionally to extract actionable insights that directly influence business decisions.

What is a data analyst startup?

A Data Analyst in a startup is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to help drive business decisions. Unlike in larger companies, startup data analysts often wear multiple hats, working with raw, unstructured data, building dashboards, and providing strategic insights. They collaborate closely with product, marketing, and engineering teams to optimize processes and improve business performance. The role requires strong analytical skills, proficiency in SQL, Python, or R, and the ability to adapt quickly to a fast-paced environment. Since startups have fewer resources, data analysts must be proactive, resourceful, and comfortable with ambiguity.

Job description

Description

The Data Analyst role is a strong fit for someone who is genuinely curious about the data they work with and enjoys collaborating in a fast-paced, startup-like environment. They enjoy uncovering the stories in unexplored data, and helping business teams make smarter decisions through insightful, reliable reporting.

As a Data Analyst, you will join the Go-to-Market Operations team at eSkill, working directly with our data stack to turn complex data into actionable insights. You will partner closely with internal leaders across Product, Sales, Success, and Marketing to support business priorities and improve visibility across key metrics.

About eSkill
eSkill provides pre-employment assessment and testing software that helps organizations evaluate candidates and improve hiring outcomes. We support better hiring decisions through data, insights, and tools that help teams make more informed choices.

This role is in-office at our downtown San Antonio location.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain dashboards and reports in Tableau or other data visualization tools for business stakeholders to help departments make informed decisions.
  • Own and prioritize the intake queue of data requests from business teams.
  • Ensure data accuracy and consistency across BI reporting and source systems to maintain trust in reporting.
  • Analyze large datasets in Snowflake to uncover trends and actionable insights that guide business strategy.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between RevOps and engineering for all Snowflake-related data needs.

Requirements
Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience building dashboards and reports using complex SQL queries.
  • Hands-on experience with Tableau or a similar BI tool, including building dashboards from scratch, maintaining executive reporting, creating calculated fields, and handling complex data modeling.
  • Strong experience with SQL building and revising queries.
  • Familiarity with AI tools like Claude or ChatGPT in work, side projects, or daily life
  • Experience managing an intake queue, prioritizing stakeholder data requests, and maintaining data quality standards across reporting.
  • Experience taking requests directly from business teams and translating reporting needs into data requirements.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States. At this time, we are unable to provide Visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working at an early-stage, high-growth, or fast-scaling company.
  • Hands-on experience with Snowflake.
  • Familiarity with CRM data systems, marketing analytics platforms, and product or platform analytics tools such as Hubspot, Salesforce, Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity and others.
  • Experience in SaaS or RevOps analytics.

About You

  • You're energized by challenging, ambiguous problems and know how to organize your work around a goal even when the path isn't clear yet.
  • You naturally think ahead of the work in front of you, anticipating where a path or plan may be flawed before launching into a project. When something looks incorrect in the data or a request is unclear, you recognize the issue and flag it with the team.
  • You proactively ask for feedback and clarification. You'd rather ask the right question upfront than deliver something that misses the mark.
  • You take ownership of your work without needing a lot of direction or specific steps planned for you. Once you understand the goal, you figure out how to get there and reach out for help when you need it.
  • You're comfortable communicating across teams (Sales, Marketing, Success, Product) and can help translate requests for information into a data requirement.
  • You connect the dots from feedback. Feedback on one deliverable ripples forward into everything you build next.
  • You're curious by default and care about why people are asking for data so that you can build with their underlying need in mind.

Benefits

  • Salary Range - $70k - $83k
  • Health insurance plan with $0 deductible and $0 co-pay.
  • Dental and vision insurance plans.
  • Flexible spending account option.
  • Open PTO Policy plus 9 paid holidays per year.
  • Participation in our 401(k) savings plan
  • Company-paid Life and AD&D coverage
