Data Analyst Non Technical information

What is a data analyst non technical?

A Data Analyst (Non Technical) is a professional who works with data to help organizations make informed decisions, but focuses more on interpreting and presenting data rather than writing code or using advanced technical tools. They often use spreadsheets and basic data visualization software to analyze trends, prepare reports, and communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders. Their role is key in translating complex data into actionable insights that can be easily understood by decision-makers across the business.

How do data analyst non technical roles typically contribute to cross-departmental projects within an organization?

Data Analyst (Non-Technical) professionals often serve as a bridge between data teams and business units, helping translate data insights into actionable strategies for departments like marketing, sales, or operations. They work closely with stakeholders to understand their data needs, prepare reports, and communicate findings in accessible language. Collaboration is key, as they frequently participate in meetings, provide context for data trends, and ensure that different teams are aligned on objectives and outcomes. This role is ideal for those who enjoy teamwork, communication, and applying analytical thinking to solve business challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data analyst non technical, and why are they important?

To excel as a Data Analyst (Non-Technical), you need strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of data interpretation, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with Excel, basic data visualization tools, and reporting platforms is typically expected, though advanced programming is not required. Effective communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management are vital soft skills that help translate data insights into actionable business strategies. These abilities are crucial for ensuring data-driven decisions align with organizational goals and for communicating findings clearly to non-technical audiences.

Orange Barrel Media (OBM) creates and operates iconic urban media displays that advertisers ask for by name in top U.S. markets. Since our founding in 2004, OBM has pioneered a community-oriented model of outdoor media development and is nationally recognized by cities and real estate owners alike seeking to implement premier media programs that add to the character of urban places. In the advertising community, OBM is widely recognized as the owner of the highest impact and most memorable advertising locations in the cities where it operates.

The OBM team is also a leader in smart city infrastructure, launching the Interactive Kiosk Experience (IKE) platform in concert with cities across the U.S. through the company IKE Smart City. The core pillars of the IKE platform are public benefit and social equity, values that we seek to maximize in every IKE market to achieve city objectives and exceed community expectations.

We are a place where people are inspired to achieve success, genuinely like each other, and have endless opportunities to grow.

Orange Barrel Media is seeking a Data Analyst to join our growing Data and Insights team. This role is ideal for someone who has thrived in a lean, fast-paced environment where you have had to be both the strategist and the executorโ€”someone comfortable defining what needs to be built and then building it. You will contribute to the full data lifecycleโ€”from architecting data solutions and building pipelines to delivering polished insights and strategic recommendations to leadership.

Please provide a cover letter sharing how your experience and interests align with this opportunity.

What you'll do

Technical and Analytical Execution

  • Design and implement end-to-end data solutions that translate business needs into scalable analytics architecture
  • Proven understanding of data models, semantic layers, and analytics structures that support multiple use cases across the organization
  • Write and optimize moderate SQL queries (CTEs, window functions, complex joins) to integrate and analyze internal and external datasets
  • Support & maintain ETL processes and data pipelines for reliable, production-ready data delivery
  • Support the Director of Analytics and Sr Data Analyst as needed for dashboards and visualizations aligned to business priorities and analytics best practices
  • Ensure accuracy, performance, and long-term maintainability of analytics outputs and infrastructure

Strategy, Insights, and Collaboration

  • Translate ambiguous business questions into analytical frameworks and actionable insights
  • Communicate findings clearly through dashboards, presentations, and data storytelling for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Partner cross-functionally with Sales, Finance, Technology, and leadership to shape analytics priorities and decision-making
  • Manage multiple initiatives with strong ownership, prioritization, and accountability for high-quality outcomes

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Analytics, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related fields
  • 3-5+ years in data analytics roles, including significant experience defining requirements, designing data models, and owning solution architecture (not just building dashboards from specifications)
  • 2+ years writing SQL queries using CTEs, window functions, and advanced techniques
  • Experience with dashboarding tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker)
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to maintain accuracy in dynamic, fast-changing environments
  • Excellent communicator who can tell compelling stories with data to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to connect data outputs to real-world business use cases and troubleshoot technical issues

Preferred

  • Work within the media, advertising, or marketing analytics ecosystem
  • Experience working in smaller, fast-moving organizations where you have built processes from scratch or solved problems without established playbooks
  • Comfort collaborating with Sales, Finance, and Technology teams in a complex, cross-functional environment

What Success Looks Like

  • You approach the business as a partner and seek to understand the "why" behind the data
  • You take ownership of your work while remaining open to feedback and collaboration
  • You balance technical rigor with practical, business-ready outputs
  • You help make data easier to use and interpret for everyone around you
  • You are the architect of how we approach analytics problems, designing solutions that scale as we grow
